Quantum of Solace is GoldenEye for a new generation and by far the best Bond game we've had in years. Praise really doesn't come much higher than that.

Saw the film today and was left disappointed so I'm hoping the game will give me the Bond fix that I'm craving!

Going off topic here but games publishers sometimes pull advertising when they don't get favourable reviews, they even go so far as to pull coverage in some cases. This is a form of bribery (more like blackmail, really) and in rare cases does explain wildly fluctuating scores, e.g. there's pressure on the writer to give a good score, there's backlash from the writer for access to materials being pulled.
Hence why there's sometimes a distrust between gamers and reviewers, and it's annoying for gamers to have to factor in a website's relationships with its advertising partners when trying to read between the lines of any relevant reviews.
Which is why reader comments that follow a review can be informative sometimes (when they're not being vitriolic). Personally I have no doubt that you think Quantum of Solace is worth a 9/10, best of all you pointed out enough features of the game for me to work out my own score based on what I enjoy, so thanks again.

A review is simply someone's persoanl opinion. Wheather you agree with that or not is up to you(I can sympathise with Roy about the Final Fantsay games as I cannot B*&£$in stand them either - but still acknowledge they are technically good games that the right gamer will get a lot of enjoyment from). I personally know I wouldn't have half the games in my collcection if I listened to every review. I take them with a pinch of salt, far preffering to simply see what you have to do in the game and how it plays and then judge for myself. However, I am perfectly happy with my copy of Quantum Of Solace and would recommend the game to anyone who likes Bond and Fps.

Also, I just read another review off an unnamed site that said the enemy AI was average at best and it pictured CPU opponents turning their backs during firefights...?
Not that I don't trust you, and I can tell you put your time (and heart) into this review....but what say you to these two complaints Roy?
P.S.-I still plan on renting it.
P.S.S.-And the online longevity seems to be a concern for this game as well...no advancement and the such??

Anyway, all publications tailor reviews to their readership to a degree, and I doubt this site is any different. Interesting that this score is the highest on metacritic, and whilst no review is 'right' or 'wrong', when you have a score that differs markedly from an average over a number of publications you do have to wonder if your judgement can be relied upon - although anybody who relies solely on one review for a title can have no complaints if they get a duffer.

As for 'its not just an opinion... its a judgement on the technical aspects of a game' - I'm afraid that when I review a game, I try and give a verdict (or judgment, or opinion) on the overall experience of the game, ie: is it enjoyable? If something technical is spoiling it (for example frame-rate slowdown whenever lots of action kicks off) then I'd obviously incorporate that into the review, but otherwise, I probably won't. Or to put it another way: I only tend to mention the really techie stuff when it has a detrimental effect on the game (as I did with the few strange bugs I found with this one). Frankly, we expect all games, considering their price tags, to be technically top-notch.
Conversely, it might be the most technically-accomplished piece of software ever seen... and yet still be dull as dishwater. If you want detailed essays on the technical specs, then pick up a copy of Edge, they live for that kind of thing. If however you simply want one videogame fanatic's take on whether he thinks a game is worth buying, then read my reviews - simple choice! Oh, and as for being called a liar - 'sticks and stones will break my bones, etc...'
To try and answer your points bgkob - a good point well made about the lack of a four-player split-screen multiplayer, or even a two-player split-screen option. I have to admit that this is one thing which has bugged me for a while about a lot of different games, however as you mention, everything's about the online now, and while I'd love to have the option to get a bunch of friends round for some same-screen, same-geographical location deathmatch, in reality most of my friends these days tend to hook up online, as it means we can grab an hour or so of competitive action without the need to actually travel to each other's houses.
I think I'm basically saying blame Xbox Live - it's made online gaming so easy to access, so enjoyable and so addictive, that split-screen deathmatch has more-or-less fallen by the wayside! Ironically though, all those years ago when we used to play GoldenEye day-in and day-out, what we all secretly yearned for a way to be able to play the game with more screen space to ourselves, and without all our mates immediately seeing what we were doing - we went to the lengths of digging out four TVs, putting together our own four-way signal splitter, and pasting cardboard 'blinkers' over each TV so that each player could only see their quarter of the playing screen - it changed the whole gameplay dynamic completely! Now of course, we bemoan the fact that we can't all set up in the same room together, although I know for a fact that there are groups out there who meet up on a regular basis and set up their own local networks, for the sole reason of being able to shout abuse at their mates while gaming against them without the need for a headset - maybe this is the future of 'social multiplayer'?
As for the point about the AI - obviously I wasn't playing the game with the guys on this other website, so I can't really comment on their experience, but I absolutely stand by what I said about the AI. They DO turn their back on you, but it's usually when you've compromised their cover, and they're retreating to find other cover, or in order to find a way to get round and flank you. They can also be distracted by - for instance - blowing holes in something like a fire extinguisher. While this doesn't kill them (as I've seen done in other games and which has always bugged me, as fire extinguishers are not generally known for their flammability) the resultant cloud of spray foam can cause your AI opponent to temporarily blinded, or start coughing, at which point they sometimes stand up and thus become an easy target. That's not a downside to the AI though, it's just a neat little environmental touch.
I look forward to hearing more views from those who have played the game, no matter how they might conflict with mine, and if anyone else has any questions, please post them and I'll do my best to tackle them.Last edited on Sun 2 November 2008 by jtorry

Really, I'm thrilled you liked the game, my copy will hopefully be dropping on my door mat tomorrow morning. I won't deny your opinion flies in the face of current forum talk on the game, and most other reviews are pegging it as average, but I'll certainly be playing the game with an open mind.
