Ubisoft has announced it plans to remove online authentication from the PC version of From Dust, following complaints over the matter.

As reported by RockPaperShotgun, a forum post by UK forum manager "ms-kleaneasy" on August 1 originally stated that the game would only require a one-off online activation. That post was subsequently deleted and replaced with one stating that the game would always require an active internet connection at launch.

Now it seems that Ubisoft has changed its mind again, stating that a new patch will remove the need for authentication within a fortnight.

"We recognise that one of our posts in the From Dust forum regarding the need for authentication in the game was not clear," reads the new post.

"We sincerely apologise for the misunderstanding. Our tech teams are working on a patch that should release in approximately two weeks that will eliminate the need for any online authentication. This development time is required as we are working to ensure that those who have already started the game, and whose progress is currently saved on our servers, will receive and save their game information locally.

"Once the patch is ready, players who already have the game will automatically receive the update on their next login and subsequent game sessions will be 100% offline."

Judging from the responses to the new post, the game's users remain unimpressed.

"Sorry guys but damage is done," writes dariuszp. "I still demand refunds."

As RPS points out, the DRM system only succeeded in creating hassle for legitimate users; the pirated version of the game completely removed the need for a connection.

From Dust earned a 7/10 in our From Dust review.
