Activision has decided the best course of action to take regarding Liverpool-based Bizarre Creations is to close the studio, Activision Worldwide Studios' chief operating officer Coddy Johnson has told Develop.

Late last year reports of a possible studio closure surfaced, the publisher stating that although it "made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience."

There had been hope the studio would live on under the ownership of a new publisher, but Johnson's comments suggest this is now unlikely to happen.

He told Develop: "I want to be clear, our first choice was to try and keep this group together and find a buyer for the studio."

He added that the publisher had "explored a lot of leads – pretty much anyone you can imagine in the industry."

This hunt for a buyer ultimately failed.

"We've not been able to find and interested parties. So we've made as a last resort, a recommendation to the team for closure," he concluded. Analysis

It's sad to hear that Bizarre is likely to close; the studio gained a lot of fans for its Project Gotham Racing series on Xbox and its related Geometry Wars games.

Despite being rather great, Blur failed to attract an audience. The team's 007 Blood Stone also failed to live up to sales expectations.

I think Split/Second vs Blur added more spice. Blackrock Studios creators of the terrific Pure game, and of course Bizarre behind Blur from the creators of PGR.

I got both of the games and both are very good. They are unique from each other but pretty much have the same principle. Power plays from Split/Second, environmental objects and re-face the track due to the max power play button. Blur is pretty much like Mario Kart. Use items to neutralise competitors and come 1st to cross the line.

Both are very cheap and people still play them online. Blur probably has a drop in online people playing but with Blur. You can have a very fun game. Ask Ian about the whole 'Pink Passion W-Tank' lol. Something which I made up and scared people if you get my drift. ;)

That whole Split/Second vs. Blur thing was such a shame.

Saying that, I haven't played Blur yet, but I prefer the models TDU and Burnout: Paradise have now set as freefrom racing within the genre...

Absolutely ridiculous. Activison's fault for this to happen. Blur is a fantastic game and there was hardly no advertisement for it. Only facebook which in my view is a dieing social network. Twitter seems the best place to get your name about.

May was one chaotic month for games.

Prince Of Persia: TFS
UFC 2011

Advertisement is key to success. I hope someone quickly comes in and buys Bizarre Creations. Though saying that. I think its entirely on Blood Stone as well not just Blur.

Thank god, I still enjoy PGR4 to this day. I, like a lot of people was disappointed by the announcement of Blur, the demo was ok but still haven't seen a price worthy of buying it.

To be fair, they'll probably close down Bizarre Creations and just form a new one, that will most likely work on a new PGR if, that is, in the plans.

PGR will live on, it's still a Microsoft licence rather than a Bizarre Creations one. Whether it will be any good will depend on the developer team working on it...

No! Blur was awesome just wasn't advertised enough to gain enough media attention. Sigh just one of those games that's highly underrated. They really shouldn't give up. Especially on a unique ip like Blur.

Many would say it was the advertising of Blur that led to the game's lack of success and that would be Activision's fault.

A real shame this, I loved Blur. Admittedly I did buy it for 15 notes at ASDA a few month after release, but it's a fantastic game that was brought out at the wrong time. Up against the very similar but not as good Split Second and few other title if I remember correctly. Now is that the fault of the software house or the publisher...?

Also a point of note, is this the first casualty of the coalitions decision to abolish the game developers tax brake?
