The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release of Painkiller: Hell & Damnation has been delayed until April 5, 2013, publisher Nordic Games has announced.

The console release of Hell & Damnation, which Nordic describes as a "stunning and painstakingly redrawn high definition" remake of the 2004 original, had originally been due to launch on January 22. The game released on PC last October.

"We have been working around the clock to bring the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game in line with the quality and standard of the PC game," said Nordic's production and business development manager Reinhard Pollice.

"There has been a slight delay so that the console communities can enjoy the fiendishly ghoulish experience that we know they want and deserve. In taking this additional time to add the final touches, we know that players will realise that the best things do come to those who wait!"

The original Painkiller became somewhat of a cult favourite when it launched on PC back in 2004, and tells the tale of a man fighting his way through Purgatory after he and his wife are killed in a car crash.

The PC release of Hell & Damnation, though, appears to have gone down less favourably, with critics citing it as being "outdated" and a "ho-hum slaughter-fest".
