Rumours of a Need For Speed: Underground remake are “false”, Criterion’s creative director appears to have confirmed, before suggesting that the studio will no longer develop reboots or remakes of older Need For Speed titles.

Rumours of an Underground title being in the works emerged overnight after EGM posted a picture of the alleged game’s logo.

The site claimed to have received the image from an “anonymous source”, and linked the image to VideoGamer.com’s earlier report of an “Unannounced Racing Title” being in the works at Criterion.

But hours later, Criterion’s creative director Alex Ward took to Twitter to say: “Totally fake. Remakes and Reboots? #movedon”

Ward’s comment suggests that the firm may have moved away from remaking classic Need For Speed titles.

The developer’s two most recent titles include Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Need For Speed: Most Wanted, reboots of two previous Need For Speed sub-series.

Of course, Ward’s tweet may not be in relation to the alleged leak, but the timing of it would suggest it almost certainly is.

EA told VideoGamer.com that it would not be commenting on the rumour of a new Need For Speed: Underground title when contacted earlier this morning.

This year’s Need For Speed title is expected to be in development at Ghost Games and run on Frostbite 3.
