Mass Effect 3 will be a harder game than the second instalment in the trilogy, series executive producer Casey Hudson has told Belgian gaming magazine CHIEF.

Speaking to the mag - translated by NeoGAF - Hudson said that in ME3, "Normal is the new Veteran".

Mass Effect 2 offered the following difficulty settings: casual, normal, veteran, hardcore and insanity.

This means the base level game is about one difficulty level harder than that of Mass Effect 2.

According to the magazine, enemies in Mass Effect 3 will also make use of expanded tactics to defeat players - flanking them or calling in reinforcements are examples.

Mass Effect 3 is scheduled for release in winter 2011.

I used to just always play through a game on whatever 'Normal' is. But I recently played through Torchlight's main campaign starting on 'Hard' because i'd heard it was a bit easy, especially as i tried out the Alchemist and immediately shunned it as ez-mode, and I have to say it felt pretty much like Diablo's 'Normal'. I think as a general rule i'll now start on whatever 'Hard' is from the get go. Mainly because the chances of me doing a repeat play-through are slim-to-non-existent in 95% of games and the extra challenge will do me no harm.

Oh God that would be amazing.

I'm playing through it right now on Normal and I have thought it seems really easy, so this change is a nice change. I'm playing as an Adept, no idea if that's an overpowered class or not.

Amazing how bad, lazy todays gamers are , now normal is like easy 10-15 + years ago, hard is the same as normal for most games. Veteran in Me was easy. Insanity should have just been hard mode. What a joke.

What difficult but rewarding, demons Souls is amazing.

I don't think that insanity on ME2 quite lived up to it's name. That said, I wouldn't want to go into that difficulty being anything but level 30.

Insanity on ME2 was too much insanity and good lord for ME3. Cannot wait nonetheless!

Yeah, the squad AI wasn't great. I always take as much command of my squad as possible, and I honestly don't know how I'd have made it otherwise. They do really dumb stuff sometimes, but the logic of Mass Effect combat can get really complex, so I'm not surprised that the AI isn't capable of making the right decisions all the time.

My only concern is I hope to god that the squadmates AI is improved as I would usually find them getting themselves killed sharpish.

I'm scared already. ME2 was pretty difficult if you chose the wrong class, but I didn't struggle with it on Insanity as much as I did with ME1. Again, that might be a class thing, and there was much more scope for customisation in ME1, so that probably didn't help.

Flanking will be a bastard, that's for sure. The bits where I struggled often involved the Blood Pack, who will rush you a little bit and pressure you. Mass Effect from a distance has always been quite easy.

Cripes, I can only dread to think what this means for Insanity mode.
