EA is sending weather balloons holding copies of Mass Effect 3 into the stratosphere.

USA Today reports that the space-faring publicity stunt will take place next week in New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, London and Paris.

The balloons will be fitted with a GPS tracker and their locations will be detailed on the Mass Effect website.

Manage to find one (will it even be in one piece?) and it's yours.

Mass Effect 3 will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on March 9.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

This promotional stunt will go absolutely fine unless one of the copies accidentally kills somebody.

The map on the ME website is *****. But I think this is the right one on the APRS site. Balloon NRMNDY should make it easy to track on Monday.

Should we not be worried about the games being on fire when they hit the ground at a few hundred miles an hour? Not gonna' stop me from trying to catch one, mind.

Cool! They'll blates set them off somewhere stupidly busy like dilly circus. I'll have a look at the predicted wind directions if I'm bored at work next week.

Becoming slightly concerned at the budget EA are giving Mass Effect 3's marketing. They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't have extensive future plans for the series. I was sort of hoping it would be a single trilogy, because I just don't have faith in EA as a publisher to push it in the right direction in the future.

Yup, my first thought was 'what if one pops and hurtles through the cranium of a lovely old lady?'

Played the demo the other night and I'm still not sure what I think about Mass Effect. I might enjoy it, I might not and part of me thinks it could be one of those games I buy because I want to get into it, realise it's not for me and then never play again.

It's difficult when everyone goes on about how good those games are though...
