EA: No info on PS3 Mass Effect 2 at this time

Will it eventually come to the PS3?

EA has refused to clarify speculation surrounding what platforms the hotly anticipated sci-fi action RPG Mass Effect 2 will eventually be released on.

In a statement issued to VideoGamer.com, publisher EA said: "There is no information on a PS3 version at this time."

PS3 owners were seemingly left out in the cold when EA officially confirmed Mass Effect 2 yesterday. In the press release the game was listed as "coming to Xbox 360 and PC in early 2010". The press release made no mention of the PlayStation 3.

EA's latest statement is bound to add further fuel to speculation that Mass Effect 2 may eventually come to the PS3. The game may be a timed Xbox 360 and PC exclusive, as we have seen with FPS BioShock. EA is famous for bringing its games to as many platforms as possible.

"We're going to surpass the extraordinary gaming experience we brought our fans in Mass Effect by delivering intensified combat and expanded weapon options as well as increased depth of planet exploration, all while delivering a powerful, emotionally engaging story," said Dr. Ray Muzyka, General Manager and CEO, BioWare and General Manager and Vice President, EA.

"Mass Effect 2 is shaping up to be an unforgettable RPG-shooter experience, taking players on a non-stop roller-coaster ride filled with stunning plot twists and no-holds-barred action."

In this dark second chapter, Saren's evil army of Geth soldiers has just been defeated, and humans, who are still struggling to make their mark on the galactic stage, are now faced with an even greater peril.

I was thinking along the same lines Rogue, if it's all on one disk then PS3 owners wouldn't miss out on the continuation of your character and it would take advantage of the extra space available on Blu Ray, unless it's going to be so big it will take up multiple DVDs. Actually has it been confirmed that you'll still be able to use your old character?

Although I distrust EA so much at this point that I'm not getting my hopes up.

The secrecy makes me wonder if they have a 'special edition' planned for the PS3 - that is MassEffect 1&2 all on one bluray disc, for whenever the exclusivity deals end.

I think it will be on the PS3 and here is why. Whenever a game is going to be an exclusive, the company and the platform always make sure to mention that the game is going to be exclusive to that platform because it invigorates sales and interest for that platform. Sony always makes sure to let everyone know when their games are exclusives. Microsoft would surely do the same; the only reason why EA is not saying its exclusive is because they have a timed exclusivity deal for MS and therefore it will eventually go to PS3. But MS paid them extra not to mention the PS3. BTW, I don't even own a PS3, just a 360, so no one call me a PS3 fanboy, okay?

I think timed is the key word here possible see it 6 months or a year later on ps3 ala bioshock. Would great if they did flesh 1 and 2 together tho for ps3 as a release I would possibly buy that even tho I have the 1st on pc.

On this exclusivity not being clarified lark, (which I find dubious) I think it's unlikely to go to PS3. As long as the possibility is being left on the table, anyone looking forward to Mass Effect 2, as a ps3 buy will be following the game. At some point, if it's confirmed to be 360/PC only, the interested could still decide they wanted to play the game, and make moves to be able to do so. If I were Microsoft, I'd probably encourage the door to be left open, on as many "multiplat" titles as possible...

Then, I also recall the statement from one of Sony's execs stating that, essentially, exclusive is less than an absolute term, when it comes to games.
But, come on, they're talking 2010 for this, and we're not even through Spring of 2009! >:/
Then, I don't think that EA would release a blatantly untrue statement. They'll know that whatever they say will be read into, around, and between any whichever lines, lol!

We've seen the developers encouraging existing players to retain their saves from the first game, a facility that PS3 players wouldn't have; and, I wonder whether, even if they did release "2" as a stand-alone, for PS3, would they get many takers? We know there's a "Mass Effect trilogy", which suggests that the game was built with that philosphy. If Bioware were to package the first two, together (just IF), then that's a +1 to Sony's points, lol, and further makes vagueness over release platforms a bit pointless, really.

If EA are looking to get the PS3 onboard to maximise audience and profits, then I'd imagine a game in a similar vein, that isn't directly based on the Microsoft games - but, perhaps set in the same universe? - could be a go-er for them. But, I don't believe that Mass Effect will make that jump, as it stands.
