The BBFC reveals nudity and a single sex scene with possible human on alien action.
The BBFC classification for Mass Effect has revealed that the game has been awarded a 12 rating for "moderate violence and one sex scene".
Violence is pretty common these days, but a sex scene is sure to cause a bit of a stir. According to the extended classification over on the BBFC website the scene in question is "brief and undetailed" but does include "breast nudity in one version of the scene".
The classification goes on to state: "If playing as a male character the scene can take place between him and a human woman or a humanoid female alien. If playing as a female character the scene can take place between her and a male human or a female humanoid alien."
So that's quite a variety and certainly something for most sexual persuasions. Mass Effect is scheduled for release across Europe on November 23.

Haha - "Human on Alien action"... classic.

Apparently only heterosexual men and homosexual women play videogames?
No gay scenes?
Bloodstorm wrote at 18:58 on 18 September 2007
Ermm, if you read the article you can do both....
Male to female
Female to female
Female to Male.

Good thing
I think it's good there's a sex scene in there without any great furore (sorry - spelling?). Films with a 12 rating have had sex scenes as a rather ordinary thing for ages, and if games are following suit, it shows they are growing up - hooray!

@Bloodstorm: I think Joeeeee meant why don't we ever get any hot man lovin' in videogames? (Barring The Sims, of course, where everyone's inherently bisexual anyway.)
It's an entirely valid question - to have heterosexual and female homosexual relationships in a game but not male homosexual relationships seems a bit of a cop out really. Still, Bioware are better than most when it comes to dealing with sex and relationships in games, but I think we're a long way from having an openly homosexual (male) lead character in a game, purely due to the market demographics.

To the best of my knowledge there is also a "hot man lovin'" romance option. It may not have been mentioned the classification as it doesn't show anything that affected the rating.
But unless they pulled it out since I was last on the project because the writing didn't work, I'm virtually certain that a male-male romance is in the game.

Yeah, maybe they "pulled it out" at the last minute. Ha!

I get it!

AFAIK the plan was always to have the two human romance options be straight, and the alien be bi-sexual.
For those clamoring for man-on-man romance from BioWare, I would direct you to Jade Empire.

i agree, bioware has included female and male homosexual options in previous games, so i think if they left any out this time around it's not because of political reasons, but rather to serve the story's purposes....bioware has already proven themselves a progressive company both socially and technologically

Can you imagine the insane public outrage this would have sparked 10 years ago? 5 years ago? I'm glad to see we've come a long way towards maturity, but at the same time, they present it like, "Oh yeah, alien lesbians. Next!"

Oh other anonymous user, you just made my day.

Don't forget that another BioWare game, Jade Empire, included the following choices:
man/woman
woman/man
man/man
woman/woman
man/woman/woman (menage a trois)

I would suspect that the reason it is not mentioned is that probably the male to male one would not contain nudity. So unless they plan on producing pornography I do not think that would show anything. Breasts are considered nudity in many places and so that would justify the warning.

Why
Anyone else find it disturbing how violence is simply accepted in entertainment while sex is taboo? One is a natural part of human life that leads to creation, one is destruction and sorrow. It's pathetic.

It sounds a bit ridiculous to argue that sex JUST leads to destruction and sorrow, though you can certainly make a good case for it.
