Our tips on how BioWare can improve on a sci-fi masterpiece.

I'll preface this by saying that Mass Effect is an absolute wonder of a game. As I said in the review, it's a sci-fi fan's wet dream. However, we know that developer BioWare is developing Mass Effect as a trilogy, so, with that in mind, we thought we'd put together VideoGamer.com's Top 10: Things that will make Mass Effect 2 magic. Read on and please, buy the game tomorrow.

10. Sort out the graphical glitches.
Mass Effect's graphics are tremendous. The in-game cut-scenes, character detail and level environments are some of the best available on the console. Which makes it all the more annoying to see the frame rate drop to worrying levels on occasion, frequent tearing and regular texture pop-in. First things first BioWare: get Mass Effect 2 optimised for the 360.

9. Loading times.
We appreciate BioWare's effort to disguise the game's loading, we really do. It's a nice touch to have lifts taking you to different levels in your ship, the Normandy, and in most of the game world's installations. It's an even nicer tough to have radio snippets played while you wait, and the odd bit of dialogue. But really, you spend waaay too much time in lifts in Mass Effect. The silliest is on the Normandy, where the lift takes ages to go what can't be more than 20 metres. This probably has something to do with the game having to access completely from the disc, but we'd love to see lifts sped up. This is the future after all!

8. Make using the Mako rover more interesting.
The Mako rover isn't as fun to use as it ought to be. This is less to do with the Mako itself, and more to do with the sections of the game where you use it. What you end up doing is driving around, zooming in on lots of Geth and taking them out with the cannon and running the odd enemy down. It can get a bit boring after a while, and the camera certainly doesn't have a good time. We want more roadkill and more destruction, more interesting enemies to go up against in the Mako, and even a co-op mode (more on that later) where one drives and one shoots, Halo style.

7. Better side quests.
I loved most of the side quests in Mass Effect. But they weren't much of a departure from what BioWare did with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It very much follows a pattern of talking to an NPC, pick up mission, running a few errands, then turning it in. We'd like BioWare to have a look at the side-quests with a view to making them a bit more interesting.

6. More planets to explore.
When you first get access to the Galaxy Map the Mass Effect universe can seem a bit daunting, with tonnes of star systems and planets to explore. But you soon realise that the game world isn't as big as it first looks. You can't land on most of the planets, only scan them and others will only have some information available to read. One of the best things about Mass Effect is going off on a tangent from the main story and simply exploring new planets, but there aren't enough of them. We'd like a much bigger universe and more planets to land on please.

5. Being able to control other squad members.
Mass Effect has some of the most memorable squad members ever. From the menacing Krogan Battlemaster Urdnot Wrex to the considered Turian Garrus Vakarian, each has a fully fleshed out back story and genuine character development. But one of the things I thought as I had these guys by my side was, wouldn't it be cool to be able to control them once in a while? Don't get me wrong, I never tired of my Commander Shepard - I just longed on occasion for the opportunity to take Wrex out on a solo mission, bludgeoning everything before him. How cool would that be?

4. Blur the line between right and wrong.
There are many tough decisions to make in Mass Effect. But very rarely is the line blurred between right and wrong. I can only think of one or two missions that posed me a genuine moral conundrum. Sometimes no-one is right or wrong, and the arguments for and against are not clear cut. I'd like more of this please.

3. Interrupting NPCs using the conversation wheel.
Mass Effect's conversation wheel is great. It's intuitive, efficient and quick. It also helps that you don't pick the exact statement you will make, more of a summary, so you never know how your character will put what you want them to say. But it's not a revolution, and doesn't include interrupting, which would be a fantastic addition to the dialogue system. It could be a way to subtly impose yourself, perhaps earn more Renegade points as a result. If you then wait for someone to finish what they have to say, that might earn you Paragon points. And what about being able to control your level of interest in what is being said, displayed through your facial expression? That could be a useful way of annoying NPCs, or getting them to reveal more interesting information. Whatever, it looks like we've only seen the beginning of what can be done with Mass Effect's conversation wheel.

2. Equipment management.
One of the biggest issues I had with Mass Effect was how you manage your equipment. When you reach the 150 item limit, everything you pick up you have to dump - you can't get rid of old stuff from your inventory. Obviously this needs to be fixed, as well as implementing an optimise button so you can quickly kit yourself and your party out in the best gear you have in the dustbin that is your back pack. Then we can stop wasting time checking we have the best stuff equipped at all times and get back to the action.

1. Online co-operative play.
Mass Effect is one of the greatest single-player experiences I've ever had the pleasure of indulging in. But imagine how great a multiplayer game it could be? Three-player co-op through Xbox Live, with full support for voice communication. You could bring in your character from the single-player game to take on special commando missions custom made for co-operative play, or even the main story, if BioWare could make it work, like Halo 3. And what about a VS mode? Two teams battle each other in a Gears of War-style online multiplayer offering? I'm excited just typing this stuff.

My main feeling after playing through Mass Effect was that there felt like there were two different teams working on the main story and the side planets. Everything had great atmosphere and variety in the main places you visit. On the side planets there were 4 basic building types. It was frustrating entering a place and knowing the layout the moment you walked through the door. Even if they made the interiors modular so they could make different layouts without having to model out each new one would have been an improvement. They definitely must improve on this in the next installment.

As far as the Mako was concerned, and the inventory thing, they really could have fixed both of the issues by making the omni gel do more than open doors and what not. If they started you with a basic Mako and you could use Omni-gel and credits to upgrade it, better tires, stronger guns, armor, etc, it would have made the side aspect of the game more interesting. Just like building your characters, you'd get to the end of the game and feel like YOUR Mako was a the shizznight. This way breaking down spare equipment for omni-gel would actually mean something and you would have something to do with your loot once your credits maxed out because there is nothing better to buy.

The same could be said for equipment. If you could go to some type of armorer and provide credits and Omni-gel for custom gear, or improve gear and upgrades fromt heir base level, or even use it to order specific gear (Nothing ticked me off more than having to travel back and forth between planets hoping that one of the shops would spawn the type of armor I'm looking for into their inventory...ugh) that would have been a great mechanic added to the game. As it was they didn't fully think out the Omni-gel element of their game.

I think being able to control your team mates would be cool, but even if the developers thought that would hurt the game play somehow, THERE WAS NO FREAKIN REASON NOT TO BE ABLE TO GIVE EACH TEAM MATE INDIVIDUAL ORDERS!!!! This was the most frustrating thing about the combat system to me. If I had one team mate using a sniper rifle and another using a shotgun, I should be able to tell the sniper to sit back while me and the one with the shoddy move in for some close combat. It made no sense that my squad members were joined at the hip. Just equip them the same you say? It's more or less what I'd end up doing most of the time, but it sure did take away the individuality away from them.

If they fix these issues, I think the next game will be awesome. Heck even WITH these issues I played through the entire game with 6 different characters (daggone achievements....) and even the DLC mission.

I definetly agree EXCEPT THE FIRST ONE. These are great ideas and i remember thinking them while playing especially the KOTOR style side quests... As for the xbox live one, i dont like! Bioware would be wasting too much time and would have to sacrifice other great improvements. Either this or they would have to postpone the much anticipated release date which is out of the question for me!

You can interrupt using the conversation wheel. Just select the option and hit X instead of A. But as far as I know it doesn't give you renegade points, so yeah, that should be added.

I dont like number one and number five. One, my xBox live connection is iffy and i like the fact that its a game i can truly enjoy while traveling without an internet connection. I dont like 5 because then it will feel more like a shooter with changing classes, I'd rather you be able to give you squad mates individual commands rather than generic both go here, both attack that it should be wrex kill that, ashley take cover.

I find it interesting when gamers eventually critique (or tear down) a game that totally pushed the envelope of fun and depth. I suppose it's human nature, huh. I'm just glad Wes Y-B prefaced it with saying he loved the game... I agree with load time, graphic glitches, more planets, & controlling (or being) a team member.
The moral gray area is touched on but not a focus in this game but honestly i like it like that.
I don't suppose anyone cares that background items, boxes, and base & mine layouts were the same ALL ACROSS the galaxy. A track housing nightmare! Change that up for ME2 please.

I didn't like that, in the game, whichever class you chose you always started with all the weapons. if you were a biotic, you have a useless shotgun, sniper and assault rifle on your back. and aromor choosing wasn't wery good. why do we always have to use an armor. if you were a dude you could use nomal clothes, and if a girl you could use a dress. And the exploring of planets were baaaaaaaaaaaaaad. all of them were lifeless rocks painted in different coulors. if you read about a planet it could say what the main colony and population. but you couldn't visit them, and alle the lifeless planetes could maybee have birds, plant, animals, people who didn't want to kill you. and all the space ships you go on is the same, well the three of them exept the Normandy. and all the rubble you find on the planets were always the same models, just two models. and the sprinting. a baby could sprint longer then him. i agree that we should be able to play as the teammates, like in KOTOR. and maybee more custimasible background. and tha the most modern you could drive in 200 years was a tank on wheels. were are the flying cars. i was disepointed when i learned we weren't going to fly the Normandy. almost evrything from the first videos of Mass Effect were diferent.

I disagree with a lot of these, it doesnt take long to pick your equipment. you dont need an optimised button for it, taking a minute to look at your equipment and pick the right thing is part of the game immersion.

No no no multi-player. Never. Bioware should focus on the single player. There are a hundred and one online shooters, there are very few games like KoToR and Mass Effect. Why would anyone want Mass Effect to be like Halo 3 or Gears of War? Those are good games, but we need variety. It seems like 90% of games coming out now have tacked-on online. Co-op, maybe, but I never ever want to see Mass Effect with multi-player like Gears. Portal, Bioshock, Mass Effect, the best games this console generation didn't have multi-player and they shouldn't. Not every game needs multi-player.

What I've really been wondering, though, is what'll happen in #2 if you played through #1 more than once? I used the same character, but made completely different decisions the 2nd time around.

Love the game, can't wait for #2. I agree that it did get repetitive at times, but it was still the best game I've played (and re-played). Great story.

number two is stupid, just manage it on your own. and an optimize button? not just high stats make something better, it is what the player preference on certain stats are.
