Castlevania: Lords of Shadow developer MercurySteam has teased the first look at its next project.

A teaser image for the game was spotted on the developer’s website this weekend, showing a man smoking a cigar and piloting what appears to be a futuristic ship.

The image is joined by eerie background music and the text: “Exploring new worlds, fighting strange creatures, discovering new heroes. Expect news soon.”

It isn’t known whether MercurySteam will be partnering with Konami on the new project, although there have been some suggestions that it could be linked to a new Contra title teased by the publisher back at E3 2011.

MercurySteam developed both the critically-acclaimed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and its disappointing follow-up Lords of Shadow 2. It was also the studio behind first-person horror Clive Barker’s Jericho and American McGee’s Scrapland.

Gamescom kicks off next week, which seems quite the coincidence, doesn’t it?
