L4D only possible because of Xbox LIVE and Steam. MS marketing guys 'hardcore' L4D players.
Valve doesn’t see the “big, bad and evil” side of Microsoft, the company has said in response to questions over Left 4 Dead’s Xbox 360 and PC exclusivity.
At E3 last week Left 4 Dead 2 was announced during Microsoft’s media briefing, confirmed for a November 17 release exclusively on Xbox 360 and PC.
The original Left 4 Dead was released exclusively on Xbox 360 and PC last November.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com at E3 last week, writer Chet Faliszek talked up Valve’s relationship with Microsoft when asked if a PS3 version had ever crossed anyone’s mind.
He said: “If it crossed someone’s mind it wasn’t the focus. The focus was 360 and PC. A) it’s what we develop on. B) it’s the platform we think lends itself to the interaction of our game the best.”
Faliszek also revealed some interesting titbits on the relationship Microsoft shares with Valve, describing Microsoft marketing staff as “hardcore” Left 4 Dead players.
“Microsoft didn’t know about L4D at first,” he explained. “Then they saw it last year and they just started coming to our offices to play. I think it had little to do with actual work, they just wanted to play. And actually we had them out to come take a look at L4D2 before the announcement and everything. Talking with those guys, their marketing guys, they’re like, oh we play every Friday. And they do. They’re hardcore players. They all knew how to play. I didn’t have to give them any instruction. I thought we’d have to put it on easy for you guys. Let me tell you, you guys are good.
“This is a really good relationship and they’re really supportive, they’ve been really helpful, super great. I know they’re supposed to be big, bad and evil but that’s not the side we see of them.”
PS3-owners hoping for some glimmer of hope on the possibility of Left 4 Dead coming to a Sony console in the future may want to look away now. When asked if he thought Left 4 Dead would ever come to a PlayStation console, Faliszek replied: “Right now it’s PC and 360. That’s definitely what we’re going to do. It’s just the platform that lends itself to it. And Xbox LIVE just makes it an easy thing to do.
“If you think about it, ten years ago we could have made L4D, but you wouldn’t have been able to hook up to your friends and it just wouldn’t have gained online as it did. And it’s really because of Steam and Xbox LIVE that we can make L4D.”

Truth is---the 360 cannot handle the expansion as DLC. Microsoft's new cash cow policy is digital distro. You know how they tell you that you can install games now to save your cheap ass DVD drive from making that loud jet engine sound?
Gee thanks!!! How convenient!!!
Who needs Bluray? Right?
It's download this, download that...oops, the hard drive is full. Now, you will have to either delete some of your valued content OR buy our "special super expensive proprietary hard drive" for more storage space.
And then...ka-ching$$ (Dave Chappelle voice)--- GOTCHA BITCH!!!
But wait... Thats not all---Do you wanna install and play the full version of Forza 3? Well you're gonna need some more HDD space, so start deleting some more content.
No problem. Right?
Wrong.
They should call the 360 sequel "Left for Dead2-Taken for a Ride". PC users should get it free as DLC.
Who needs Bluray? Right?
It just "unnecessarily raises the cost of the console".
Right?
Wrong.
Ooops. I hate that I did that.

Didn't know that? Hmmm... That's probably because you own a PS3 and secretly wish that L4D was ported to your console! Yet, you use this indirect "Who needs BluRay?" (did I say indirect?) attack to make it look like your console is superior. Who cares! This is the true mentality of a 360 fanboy. WHO CARES about BluRay! Unless you're a videophile and must have absolute High Def, then BluRay is for you. In that case I'd rather go buy a BluRay player, which is much better (and cheaper) for watching movies than the PS3 is. As for the size of games (and only the size), you win that argument. Yippie for you!!!
In all, you are what you say you are. Ahem… CRAZY that is!
Back to topic: I own L4D for both the PC and 360. And aside from the fact that I have a 120G HD, I don't care about it not being DLC but it would make it easier if it was. As for it not being an expansion to the PC… well, I am put off because bonus content was the main reason for buying it for the PC. Yet I don’t believe that this sequel (that should be an expansion) should be free. I’d be happy to pay about $30 or so for it, but not the full $50 or $60.

crazyblackman- the reasons for not making it DLC are more complicated than this but it's Valve's decision at the end of the day.
I do agree that Microsoft needs to make a casing to fit the 360 where any laptop hard drive can be used (just like in the PS3) which would cut the cost greatly. I also don't want to start deleting content then waiting 2 hours for it to download again when I want to play it.
ChrisW - you're mostly correct, but I'd say anyone with an HDTV would want to go HD with their media too and at the moment Blu-ray is the only way and PS3 happens to be the best player in terms of features and updates at the moment (only the lack of the top quality sound format lets it down but that IS for videophiles). I still have my old HDDVD on my 360 as well because there are so many cheap movies to get for it and the quality is pretty much the same as Blu-ray.

Left 4 Dead 2 could not be done as DLC because it doesn't fit on a DVD? And would somehow magically circumvent all the existing problems that BluRay has FORCING me to install half the games I play on my PS3 to the HDD in the first place?
Yeah, I think I'll not bother reading anything else from you. You clearly have no idea how the technology works.
