Kinect for Xbox 360 is set to become the number one consumer electronics purchase this holiday, Microsoft Game Studios' corporate vice president Phil Spencer told Edge.

"We are investing in this like we've never invested in a platform launch," said Spencer. "This is, for us, the biggest platform launch in the history of the industry.

"We'll have a huge launch portfolio, we want to sell more units than any console has ever sold in its first holiday, a new platform. Our retail partners are telling us, based on the consumer demand, 'this is going to be the number one consumer electronics purchase this holiday. Not just in the games space, all of them'.

"In North America 7,000 retailers are doing midnight events when we ship and our pre-order momentum looks huge. So this, for us, is bigger than Xbox launch, bigger than 360 launch - this is a big deal for us. How many units are we going to sell? We're completely goaled in investing as if this were the biggest console launch ever, and that's our expectation."

Kinect will launch in the UK on November 10 priced £129.99. The price includes a Kinect sensor and a copy of Kinect Adventures.

But when your only friends are imaginary incarnations of yourself and you don't want it then you're not going to know anyone that wants it.

I think their going off of pre-orders as apparently it's doing extremely well, whether or not these will turn into sales is another question.

@Woffls I'm lost? Are you saying original xbox only sold 20 mil consoles and the 360 has already surpassed that? I so agreed! And damn right all they'll be looking at is numbers the more they sell the better for them it's that simple. If they do big numbers day one it will lead to a massive demand and hype up until Christmas as with most other consoles/variants eg wii fit.

I saw some staff member in HMV playing Move the other day, I don't really get those glowing ping-pong balls on the end of those wii remotes though.

Move is great fun, but that only encourages me to get Kinect as well.

I had kinda forgotten about Kinect... all the good games coming out at the moment has overshadowed the whole move/kinect thing for me.

Yeah great, I didn't even say anything about friends.

Show Spoiler Even if it does sell a lot it won't make it good.

I was looking at it from the perspective of Microsoft determining how big the platform launch is based only on the market they already have. Xbox was a small launch because they had no existing market. Xbox 360 had a decent launch because of the Xbox install base of 24m. Kinect will have a massive launch because of the Xbox 360's current install base of 40m.

This is, of course, predicated on Microsoft selling Kinect as a platform in itself, which I don't necessarily agree with.

For them it probably is. They're just going to be looking at numbers, and this 'platform' already has an install base that's half way there. XBox had nothing, and Xbox 360 had 20 million Xbox owners or whatever it was.
