Avalanche Studios is not "in control" of Just Cause 3, producer Andreas Thorsen has stated in an interview with VideoGamer.com.

Thorsen said the studio, best known for the Just Cause series, doesn't own the IP.

"Eidos or Square Enix owns the IP. If they want to do anything else in that franchise with us I think we'd very much like to do so, yeah."

While neither Just Cause nor Just Cause 2 featured co-op, Avalanche's game designer Axel Lindberg said Just Cause would be "awesome" in multiplayer.

"It would have been awesome but it’s quite complicated technically to do. So that's the big reason why it's not in there," said Lindberg. "Now we've gotten our head around and our code basis is now more compatible with online and multiplayer type gaming so it's a good first step. Just Cause would be awesome in multiplayer."

Just Cause 3 still remains unconfirmed.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

The studio has currently moved toward downloadable game territory with its upcoming release Renegade Ops, however they seem quite keen on the the idea of a future for the Just Cause franchise.

pheewwwww! I thought the title was indicating that Eidos had handed it to another developer. That wouldn't have made any sense because it's Avalanche's own engine.

Multiplayer could be really cool in Just Cause, in the same way that it's fun in GTAIV for just messing around. The problem is how easy you want to make it to steal someone's vehicle, but I'm sure they'll think of something.

I don't really care about co-op or multiplayer. I want JC3 to have a larger map, bigger explosions, more over-the-top fun, yeah, all that good stuff.

Avalanche created a superb game in Just Cause 2. A plot which was crude, but funny, with tonnes of fun to be had around Panau. Avalanche will no doubt continue developing the franchise, seeing how well established the game is now.

Renegade Ops is co-op is it not? I've got my fingers crossed that this is a stepping stone for co-op in JC3.
