Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios has spoken out to criticise THQ's recent closure of Kaos Studios.

Speaking to Develop, managing director of Avalanche's New York studio David Grijns said "we think Kaos and New York City as a whole deserved better than this."

"We will certainly be interviewing many of them for our open positions and doing what we can to help," he added.

Yesterday, Avalanche confirmed that its New York studio was working on a new "AAA" next-gen IP.

"We have big plans for our New York studio and for our next project and we will have more news to share in the coming months," said Grijns.

THQ culled the New York based Kaos Studios this week to invest heavily in Canadian development. The publisher says it is actively hiring for jobs in its Montreal, Vancouver, and Austin studios, adding that employees from Kaos are welcome to apply for jobs there.

THQ is determined to ensure the success of its Canadian studios, even controversially poaching Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Desilets and offering him a senior role at THQ Montreal.

Kaos' final game for THQ was the commercially successful but critically lukewarm Homefront. I wrote that "there's enough material within Homefront's concept for it to spiral into something more interesting, and with plenty of talk about a sequel it's clear that's what THQ and Kaos is looking for, but this first crack of the whip falls far short of the competition" and then slapped a decent 7/10 on the game in my Homefront review.

Avalanche Studios' next game is the digital title Renegade Ops, which Emily says is bringing the spirit of Jungle Strike to 2011.
