The second Halo 4 game disc features the game's multiplayer components and must be installed in order to be played, Microsoft has told Joystiq.

Microsoft says that Halo 4's second disc "contains data that will need to be installed on an Xbox 360 hard drive or compatible flash storage device with at least 8GB of available memory in order to access 'Halo 4's' extensive suite of multiplayer features'".

This means Xbox 360 4GB owners will need to purchase an additional storage device – a USB memory stick will suffice.

This isn't the first time Microsoft has forced content to be installed, having previously done something similar with Forza 4.

Halo 4 will be released worldwide on November 6. The game has already leaked onto torrent sites.

I had completely forgotten that flash storage would work, until then I was all liek "***** you Microsoft, take your proprietary ***** and shove it up your mum, or buy me a new hard drive".

I'll partition my 32GB flash drive so that there's enough for Halo 4 MP data and nothing more.

To be honest I don't really know anyone that has the 4GB version of the 360 and I think that if anyone has their Xbox as their main console they would at least have the 60GB version or a flash drive that they could use.

I think this is unacceptable. I mean, isn't this the only 360 game where you have to do this? I mean, how convinient, Xbox's biggest title in a long time and for the foreseeable future and you might have to buy a new Xbox for it? Something's not right.

(Would it work if you plugged a flash drive in?)
