Best FPSs and best exclusives prove 360 is 'still at its heart a gaming console'.
The Xbox 360 has the best games and the best first-person shooters, a high-ranking Microsoft executive has claimed.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com to promote the launch of the Sky Player on Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE Europe general manager Jerry Johnson said that the console's exclusive games "prove the point that this is still very much at its heart a gaming console", despite strong moves to broaden the 360's appeal.
He said: "I'll come back and say that Xbox has the best games out there. It's got the best first-person shooter games out there. The exclusives we've had over the past years and what we had going into this holiday prove the point that this is still very much at its heart a gaming console.
"There's nothing we're going to change with that. You will start to see us, though, do things that are broader marketing and start to expose some of the things that are broader than just first-person shooters."
The launch of the Sky Player, which allows 360 owners to stream Sky content, is part of Microsoft's attempt to broaden the Xbox 360's appeal.
According to Johnson, Microsoft hopes the 360 will become known as more than "just a Halo or Gears of War machine".
Johnson denied, however, that Microsoft's focus would move away from the core gaming experience fans love it for.
"Trust me, I think you'll find people operate in different modes," he said. "My wife doesn't like the fact I game sometimes. I'm still going to go game sometimes. There's nothing we're going to change that's going to not focus on those customers more. In fact, not just this year but in the next year, we'll continue to do features that are targeted at that hardcore gamer. At the same time we are going to start to do things that appeal to both the hardcore gamer and the broader user, and continue to do things and start to do more targeted at the broader user specifically."
Johnson's "best games out there" comment comes at a time when the PS3 owners are enjoying the launch of some incredible games, including Naughty Dog's stunner Uncharted 2.
In the FPS category, the PS3's exclusive Killzone 2, released earlier in the year, saw rave reviews, as did Insomniac's Resistance series. The Xbox 360 has, of course, Halo 3 and the recently released Halo 3: ODST.
What do you think? What console has the best first-person shooters? What console has the best exclusives? Will the Xbox 360 always be a Halo and Gears of War machine? Let us know in the comments section below.

What console has the best first-person shooters? Tricky. My opinion (one sided as it is I admit) will be Halo 3 and Gears 2. But the reasons why these games are so great has nothing to do with the Xbox machine, it's just that Msoft has pumped up alot of money for exclusive rights. These games could just as easily sit on a PS3.
What console has the best exclusives? Pass.
Will the Xbox 360 always be a Halo and Gears of War machine? No. The Xbox 360 will always be a machine which was prone to RROD. Everyone knows it was flawed right from the start. If Msoft want to invest in their future my advice would be to make a machine which is more robust next time.

Just like before Apple started gaining momentum they weren't trying to "redefine" their operating system. They pushed Windows Vista out biting off of OS X and failed badly. Also now piggybacking Apple retail stores and opening their own "Applish" retail stores, when they said Apple entering retail was a dumb business decision years ago....... FAIL.Last edited on Thu 29 October 2009 by ghostdog25

Number of exclusive retail releases in 2009 that have scored 80 or over on Metacritic?
360: 4
PS3: 7
Since the beginning of 2008?
360: 10
PS3: 17
Not to mention that two of those 360 games this year were Halo spinoffs, and one is a set of expansion packs (for GTA). And that best FPS? The latest Halo is running 7 points behind Killzone 2 on Metacritic too.
Not a very impressive lineup at all this year, Microsoft. I think they're beginning to get a bit insecure, I think their lack of investment in software over the last 18 months or so is going to catch up on them now that Sony's sorted out their pricing.

MS need to pick up the slack a little next year to compete rather than getting a PR man to try and justify a quiet year.

The highest rated exclusive the 360 has is a tie between Gears Of War and Halo 3 (94).
LittleBigPlanet beats both of them with 95 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves completely eclipses them with a score of 97.
It's just Microsoft's way though, isn't it? They're all talk and no action. They claim to have the best exclusives but in a year where PS3 owners have seen Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Infamous and the soon to be released Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time Microsoft have released one racing game (Forza 3) and one game that only lasts about 6 hours (Halo: ODST). I think it's pretty obvious to any real gamer who has the best exclusive games..........

It will be interesting to see how MS respond over the next year or so as the PS3 has definatly created some competition this year - finally!
