Characters and progress lost in GTA Online cannot be restored, Rockstar has confirmed.

The confirmation came via a comment from the publisher on its latest update, where it announced that it would be gifting all GTA Online players with $500,000 GTA$ as compensation for their troubles.

"Hi everyone, For those that are still having any technical issues, as mentioned above there is a title update coming next week that will include more fixes including the vehicle loss one – and we will remain committed to continuing to fine-tune the game to address any and all issues to get GTA Online running as smooth as possible," said Rockstar.

"Please remember to visit the Rockstar Support site at for the latest info or to report your problem if you don’t see it there.

"For those asking about their lost characters or rank, those will not be able to be restored so we sincerely hope that this cash stimulus we’re giving out this month will help you get back on your feet or to make your new life in Los Santos & Blaine extra sweet."

A new title update expected to release this week will allow Rockstar to gift the compensation, which will be offered in two $250,000 chunks.

"For those asking about other forthcoming GTA Online content such as Heists, those are indeed in the works and we hope to provide an update with release timing soon," Rockstar added.

GTA Online has been hit by numerous issues following its launch on October 1, with the majority of kinks ironed out in recent title updates.

I thought they disabled the GTA$ purchasing system from the start, so no one should have lost out in that way. Though I'd say if anyone was able to buy ingame cash that they would almost certainly refund that.

For me this isn't too bad, it's just some free in game cash. It will be interesting to see what happens to the economy, that'll be a whole lot of people buying a better car or the current high end apartment. I'm starting to wonder if I would be better off investing it on the Bawsaq, particularly in the ones related to cars and properties :D

I know Rockstar are under no obligation whatsoever to compensate players for character losses, but for those that lost characters a digital handout won't really ease the pain of losing a character (in some cases we're talking 100s of hours of gameplay). More importantly it won't replace any real life $s people spent buying things if they bought more than $500,000 ingame money and then lost it.

Personally I just gain all the way so I'm happy with it, but I feel for those that lose out.
