GTA 5's multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online, will not launch until two weeks after the game's initial release, Rockstar has revealed.

In a statement posted on the publisher's website, Rockstar said:

"Grand Theft Auto Online is a dynamic and persistent online world for 16 players that begins by sharing gameplay features, geography and mechanics with Grand Theft Auto V, but will continue to expand and evolve after its launch with new content created by Rockstar Games and the Grand Theft Auto community.

"Grand Theft Auto Online takes the fundamental Grand Theft Auto concepts of freedom, ambient activity and mission-based gameplay and makes them available to multiplayer players in an incredibly detailed and responsive online world.

"In Grand Theft Auto Online, players have the freedom to explore alone or with friends, work cooperatively to complete missions, band together to participate in activities and ambient events, or compete in traditional game modes with the entire community, all with the personality and refined mechanics of Grand Theft Auto V.

"Players can invest in their character through customizing their appearance, improving their stats, owning customized vehicles, purchasing personal property, and taking part in missions, jobs and activities to earn reputation and cash to open up new opportunities to rise through the criminal ranks. The world of Grand Theft Auto Online will constantly grow and change as new content is added, creating the first ever persistent and dynamic Grand Theft Auto game world.

"Access to Grand Theft Auto Online is free with every retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V and launches on October 1st."

Rockstar has yet to confirm the reasons behind Grand Theft Auto Online's delayed launch.

Grand Theft Auto 5 launches on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17. The first gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto Online was revealed earlier today.

MJTH what so you want them to over spend on development and put unnecessary money into over promoting it.. I thought the Trailers were enough to keep me extremely excited. timbob i cant believe your complaining about Gigs. Are you from Isreal? And Clockpunk trade the title in? WTF are you talking about?

only 16players seems a bit small for the map size, but then i guess it was never designed to be an mmo, so its fair.
also, this seems to be rockstars way of stopping tradeins, rather than dlc or online passes. im sure they couldve done it at launch, but business wise it makes more sense to keep the game in hands. im not even that bothered by it, at least its free, and gta5 will have enough for about 5 months anyway, not 2 weeks.

The trailer was a little under-whelming as it ended up being what I expected it to be. Not to say that what I expected isn't awesome, but it doesn't feel like the massive reveal I was hoping for.

They said that you need 8GB of hard drive space to play GTA V, i always assumed it was for singleplayer but now i reckon the multiplayer is an 8GB download which will be released on October 1st

Oh... that's a shame. :-/ Was hoping to dive into it right after finishing the introductory part of the main game.

I suppose many will have finished the main game and most of the exploration (to their satisfaction) after two weeks... good incentive to not trade the title in...
