Grand Theft Auto 5 will be released on September 17, 2013, Rockstar Games has announced.

The date is much later than the spring date the firm had been aiming for, but promises the wait will be worth it.

A letter to fans published on the Rockstar Games website reads:

"Dear all

"Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.

"We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

"To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience."

A four month delay points to a previously planned May release date, as many had been predicting.

Rockstar founder Sam Houser commented: "Grand Theft Auto V continues to push the series forward in new ways; Rockstar North are creating our deepest, most beautiful and most immersive world yet.

"We are very excited for people to learn more about the game in the coming months."

Me: So does this mean we'll have a simultaneous PC release now, Rockstar? Fingers crossed.

Rockstar: Probably not.

When was the last time he was right? Was that sometime around when somebody had the idea for Duke Nukem Forever?

Hmmm.. If it is a next gen release.. I may be getting a console sooner than i thought.. God the graphics! ;)

Or I could just wait for the PC version? :p

I can certainly see GTA V acting as a 'come on over to the next gen, and see what its all about' title...

God dammit, i was looking forward to a cracking summer as well.

Its been almost five years since GTA IV i'm not sure when work on GTA V actually started but either way that's quite a long time between releases. Oh well i'm sure it will be worth it but its still disappointing.

I'm betting money it will come out this gen and on the next gen consoles.

This happend before with Just Cause 1 and Gun and it will happen again I think.

Makes sense I suppose. Bioshock has been delayed so much that Take 2 has desided to move GTAV to space their line up a bit more. Plus Rockstar gets more time for polishing.

Don't think next gen won't be quite with us by then I don't think - though Rockstar's usual 'slightly late PC version' could well be a launch title for next Xbox a couple of months later I reckon. Bound to be a cross-gen title in some form I would say, too big not to be!

A disappointing time. This would have been a great summer game.

Fair enough. If it needs extra polish, it needs extra polish. I'm sure there'll be plenty of muppets moaning and cancelling their pre-orders though :p
