Grand Theft Auto 5 is being built on a new engine developed specifically for the upcoming open worlder, Rockstar Games has revealed.

"The scale of GTA is very different to LA Noire and even to RDR, so managing the team and keeping a clear creative direction becomes more difficult," Rockstar North boss Leslie Benzies told IGN.

"We had a lot of the North team working on RDR and LA Noire, which allowed us to gain experience of other projects and how to solve problems and use them within the new game engine we've created for V."

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has previously discussed the benefits the new engine brings to GTA 5.

The engine now allows for a much greater draw distance over previous GTAs, letting Rockstar "render the most distant mountains at the other end of the world many, many miles away", with further advances made to the lighting and shader model.

It's not known whether GTA 5's "new engine" is an updated version of Rockstar's RAGE, which was used to develop GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption, or an entirely new engine.

GTA 5's second trailer is expected to go live at 4pm GMT today.

I wouldn't have thought so. I doubt it's that hard to programme it so some cars like the banshees spawn much less often than rubbish ones. I reckon it's just left over bad programming, but I'm not an expert.

I thought it was partly engineered that way because they wanted to limit the kinds of cars that are available so you couldn't just roll around in a clunky Manana and get a Banshee really easily? It was massively improved in GTAIV, from what I remember.

Hopefully this should mean there isn't going to be that glitch where you see the same kind of car or lorry dozens of times in your immediate vicinity? That glitch has been around since gta 3 believe it or not. Might even date back to the 2d games lol.

Methinks your RAGE is misplaced - the proprietary engine in question has nothing to do with that developed by id, bar the fact that the first game that employed the latter, was entitled similarly.

My hope (and assumption) is that Rockstar will continue to include Euphoria for dynamic and procedural character animation in-game (a la Max Payne 3)

I've said countless times i'd love to see more companies use the ID tech 5 engine. This is definitely one to use it.

Either their new engine is very capable, or RAGE was good enough in the first place. I don't really care how they achieved the detail and scale we can see in GTAV, the important thing is they did it.

Do some work before you write an article, its already been stated that's its an updated version of RAGE and you can clearly tell that it is the RAGE engine straight out of the box if u had any sense about you. Engines get worked on constantly, always evolving. The engine used to make GTA 4 would not be same that is used for GTA 5 but still RAGE overall.
