Grand Theft Auto 5 is crashing older model Xbox 360 consoles, reports on popular GTA website GTA Forums have indicated.

Many users are said to have been plagued by constant crashing despite reinstalling the game, with some even changing hard disc drives from the original 20GB model to a newer 250GB unit.

The problematic consoles appear to have been manufactured between 2006 and 2008.

A Rockstar support rep told one affected gamer that the studio is in the process of gathering data to determine if the issue is something which can be resolved with a patch.

In the meantime, Xbox Live Support has suggested the following, although this too has mixed results:

1. Delete all GTAV game data.
2. Clear system cache three times.
3. Delete marketplace data from storage system items.
4. Unplug console for three minutes.
5. Install disc 1.
6. Power off, do not insert disc 2.
7. Restart.
8. Install disc 2.
9. Play.

Earlier today it was reported that Rockstar was looking into a fix for GTA 5's disappearing vehicles glitch.

Could be the laser being slightly misaligned rather than faulty, it's unusual for the new slim models but there's probably a local "We can fix consoles too" independant second hand PC shop in your area if you're in a city, they could check it for you.

The alternative is to try a DVD lens cleaner which you can pick up in Currys/Maplins/PCWorld/Amazon as a cheaper DIY "this might fix it" solution.

Pps- The very last time we tried to install it to the flash drive, we repeatedly got a message half way through installing that the disc couldn't install as may need cleaning? Wondering if our xbox is the problem now.

P.s - That's me trying to be brave! I wanted to cry handing back that game, I was dying for her to complete so I could have my turn. Seriously gutted about the whole fiasco .

We took it back to the shop in the end, lucky to get a refund really. There were none left in stock to try so I don't know whether to buy another in case it happens again, maybe it's the xbox , who knows. Shame for my Daughter as she loved her game.

Well, once the seal was ripped off the GTA box:

1 - Turned on XBox
2 - Inserted disc 1 (install disc), which installed itself to the HDD
3 - Inserted disc 2 (play disc) which then commenced playing after finishing its automatic install, so quit to dashboard
4 - Inserted 16GB Scandisk USB drive into rear USB port on 360
5 - Formatted USB drive via the 360 console
6 - Inserted disc 2 (play disc), waited for it to load on the dashboard, pressed X for 'Details' and installed it to USB drive
7 - Back to dashboard, selected play, all runs fine.

We had problems with the restart error about 2 days in, and only installed on the USB (brand new,32gb) after trying all the other solutions, so cant be the USB, surely? Can you do me a big fave and take me through the steps for installing via the USB again, from the beginning so I can see we did this correctly. We have repeatedly cleared cache etc, tried the disc method no luck, plenty of storage left on the HDD.

If it were me I'd install disc 1 to the HDD as per usual, then just run disc 2 from the tray without installing it, that would narrow it down to the USB being the problem?

Cheers mate, thanks for replying , we did do the install on hardrive then disc 2 on a new 32gb usb we had here. It looked promising but the game crashed twenty mins in with the same message. ill try to get a replacement but as you say it could be a hardware malfunction even though the xbox isnt old . To say I'm fed up is a huge understatement!

I've got the same XBox, it works fine on mine. I installed disc one to the hard disk and disc two to a 16GB usb stick (cheap Sandisk one), no problems here.

Ultimately it's down to the vendor, you're covered by various Retail Acts, they should exchange it for another copy for you, though if we've the same XBox it sounds like either a hardware fault with the XBox or something to do with the way the game was installed. My advice? Reinstall, if that doesn't work, exchange at Tesco, if that doesn't work, get back to Rockstar/Microsoft.

My Xbox is only a year old, black slim, 250 storage and we have had nothing but
restarting and losing game save which started 2 days in . At first they said its an error caused by disc 2 , I've been on the phone /email/ twitter to xbox and rockstar, completed every solution they sent us many times, tried installing on a flash drive EVERYTHING!!!! All im being told now is to try it in other xboxes then see if its the discs or my xbox, then nobody knows who is responsible
for exchanging or refunding if it doesn't work, is it tesco who sold us the game, or
rockstar who produced the game ? Worst thing is its my Daughters bday gift and shes gutted she cant complete like all her friends- and no one will let us try our copy in their xbox! They think its a curse! Why did the instructions to set up say install disc 2 , then send out info saying actually DONT install disc 2 ?!!
Im gping to eurogamer expo on saturday and if i see any Rockstar reps
I'm going to end up on the news as the crazy woman holding
hostages until someone helps us with this whole frustrating nightmare !!!!

Its pretty much a lottery. Been problems on both consoles but for a release this size I think the small amount of complaints being received is formidable. As for the Online launch I expect wide scale server crashes hopefully Live will handle it a little better than PSN as will be expected but I think when you get X Amount of million people logging on it's going to strain the resources and there will be a lot of fire fighting.

Definitely glad I got this for PS3 in the end. Wonder if more problems will arise from GTA Online's launch.

This happens pretty much every time a massive game comes out that has people playing for extended sessions. All the more so when it's pushing the console to it's limits, as GTA V surely does.

Any Xbox 360 model prior to the Jasper motherboard, which introduced a 65nm GPU, is essentially a ticking time bomb.
A general hardware failure isn't a matter of if, but when.

Unfortunately, refurbished older Xbox 360's would, at best, be fitted with the Opus board.
Essentially a Falcon board with a 65nm CPU, but 90nm GPU and minus the HDMI which older consoles didn't have a port for in the casing.
At worst, it'd be another Xenon.

As for the game itself, I've just had the usual bugs acknowledged by Rockstar related to cars not being reliably saved in garages or losing upgrades if one character drives another ones default car.
Certainly never had it crash, which is impressive for such a large scale sandbox game that's been played for about... 50 or 60 hours I'd reckon.
Certain way more reliable than Skyrim ever was!

As for LOD issues, well, that's just somewhat inevitable. It's how the game even runs on consoles with a framerate that is usually between 25 and 30.
Just a very aggressive algorithm.
If a lot is happening on screen, causing the framerate to dip, then texture loading will drop on the list of priorities and you'll get more blurries as it tries to catch up.

Apparently, the optimum way to play the game on 360 is to install disc 1 to a USB stick, and then disc 2, the play disc, to the HDD.
Rather than the other way around.
