Grand Theft Auto IV Features

For:Xbox 360  Also On: PS3PC Release Date: 28 April 2008

GTA 4 is so incredible that it's made us question what really makes a great game.

GTA 4 goes on world-wide release tomorrow (although numerous retailers have starting selling it), and while it'll undoubtedly go down in history as one of the greatest games ever made, its effect on the industry as a whole might not be so great. You see, GTA 4 is so brilliant, so far ahead of pretty much ever other game released on consoles to date, that it's going to be hard to get back into the groove of playing 'normal' games.

It might well be unfair to compare every future release to GTA 4, but it has set a benchmark that, even only a few years into this console generation, might not be bettered. Open-city action games are likely to feel the full impact, with THQ's Saints Row 2 and Midway's This is Vegas both looking dated before they've even been released. It's not that they look like bad games; they just aren't going to be GTA 4. I loved the original Saints Row and, perhaps foolishly believed GTA 4 wouldn't be all that different. In reality GTA 4 seems like it's a generation ahead in terms of game design.

It would be wise for publishers to hold off on new releases for a while. GTA 4 took me 40 hours to play through, and that took quite a bit of dedication over a few days. If you're only playing it for an hour or two per day and want to dabble with online multiplayer, you're not going to need another game for well over a month, and you've got the fun of just messing about to keep coming back to. GTA 4 has practically sentenced every May release to an early sales grave. Looking down the May release schedule, it's SEGA's high-budget free-roaming-esque Iron Man that looks to be at most risk. Although it looks like a perfectly solid movie tie-in, are people even going to go and see the movie when they've got a 40-hour epic sat at home?

The one game that might actually benefit is Ubisoft's Haze. Due out exclusively on PlayStation 3 on May 23, the large increase in PS3 sales due to GTA 4's release might just give the FPS a much needed sales spike. Ubisoft must be hoping that PS3 owners want something new four weeks on from GTA 4. They might, but expectations will be at an all-time high - expectations Haze probably won't be able to live up to. It's not until late May and early June that the release schedule really starts to pick-up. Hopefully the shadow cast by GTA 4 will be a little smaller by then.

From a critic's point of view, GTA 4 is a bit of a nightmare. I know every game can't be created equally and that Game A might have a budget 10 times that of Game B, but it's not as if GTA 4 has been released at £100. It's the same price as every other game released this generation. We've had 10s before. For me, Gears of War stands as one of the greatest action games ever made, but it didn't completely obliterate every game that went before it - it was just that extra bit special. GTA 4 on the other hand is so far ahead of its rivals that it makes you wonder what other developers have been playing at.

There have been plenty of excellent games released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, games we thought were truly next-gen, but it seems we've been fooled. They might have looked great, but most were just old games in new clothing. GTA 4 feels new and exciting, and full of possibilities. It's a game that's has limitations just as all the others, but when playing it you feel like you can do anything. Until that feeling goes away I don't think I'll want to play anything else.

Has GTA 4 changed gaming forever? Will it be the only game you buy in the next few months? Let us know in the comments section below.

While I agree that GTA 4 is a great game, I certainly don't agree with your opinion that it is the best free world non linear RPG out there. Oblivion provides a gameplay that is on par with GTA4 if not better than it. GTA4 however has some cleverly designed elements like TV channels mocking the Feudal lords of this age, an accurate representation of NYC, radio stations mocking the middle class and it's 'problems', the accurate representation of each ethnicity facing problems because of it's culture etc. So people feel like they are well connected with the game.

wow... seems that even critics can be fooled by the "halo" effect. Yes GTA 4 is certainly a good game, even great and near perfect. However, to say that suddenly every other game is way behind is just wrong. Its effect on other sandbox games may indeed be that it makes them look pale in comparison, but other games not so much. Not everyone prefers the theme or the play style. In the end its also still just Grand Theft Auto (albeit in a much higher form). In this regard it is not nearly as revolutionary as GTA 3. Yes it may have a better, more tight story line, but in the end it is just more of the same but with better graphics and art direction.

Don't believe the hype, it's not that great. Every car i got into handled like a firetruck from the past games. The fighting is not much fun either. By the time i finished the first mission i was so frustrated i turned the game off. I went to the midnight release and it seriously ruined my day/year so far. I was so excited for this game and now i'm totally dissapointed. My suggestion is to wait a week and pick it up when it's in the used section.

To be honest though, I felt much the same after playing GTA 3 and obviously it inspired other developers to up their game. Whilst GTA IV is undoubtedly a superb game (I'm loving it at the moment) I am pretty confident that there'll be other stuff just as enticing out later this year.

well written article

I completely agree with the part about how every other game'll feel 'not as exiting'

Iv been following GTA 4 news right from after san andreas came out (though gta 4 was only a speculation back then)

GTA games have always had a deep impact on me, GTA 1 I got on the same day i bought my PS1 (even though I didnt know what the game was about)
Since then Iv been hooked to every GTA title, taking months to complete the single player missions.

Hope R* continues their quality work and hopefully wont goto EA

I can't agree comletely here with 'changing things' that to that extent. It's not like (I realise HL2 is pc based, but an example) half life 1 is dead because Half life 2 destroyed it's aged graphics and lack of physics. GTA has it's own seperate audience, which all the previous titles in the series has sold too. As goes Metal Gear solid and so on. Some people prefer Fifa games to GTA for example.. it's all down to who likes what genre. Nothing will change, after a bit of hype dyes down.

Its going to be a amazing game all the sceens and videos look great an some of the different things that they have added will make the game feel so much more alive.

I think this can only be a gd thing for everyone, game companys are all going to have to go tht extra mile now to make their game the one you want to buy. Rather than sticking you on that narrow path from start to end giving the gamer no freedom.

I think the will be awhile b4 a another great game comes out of the wood work. For me i'm eying up fallout 3, that could be the next big game if they get it right.

I know what you mean about playing other games after you've played this one...

I'm trying to think of examples from previous consoles and their games... I'm already looking forward to GTA V and I haven't even played IV yet!

I reckon it will be this and Fifa 2008 for me for the month.... I mean, GTA IV looks good but it won't beat slapping some Croydon based Barcelona fan online with the Goooooooooners! ;)
