UPDATE: Activision has contacted VideoGamer.com to clarify Steer’s statements, and has confirmed the game will run in 1080 resolutions on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

ORIGINAL STORY: Recently announced GoldenEye 007: Reloaded will run at 720p on Xbox 360, but PlayStation 3 owners will be able to play the game at 1080.

The detail was confirmed to VideoGamer.com by Activision producer James Steer at a London announcement event for GoldenEye 007: Reloaded.

GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is being developed by Eurocom, and is an HD update of 2010’s GoldenEye 007 on the Wii. Eurocom has developed a new engine “from the ground up” for the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the game – but is it more than a simple port? “Undoubtedly,” says Steer. “From a single-player point of view it’s the same story and the same locations, but there isn’t an area that we haven’t gone and upgraded or reloaded in some way.”

But what’s been changed, exactly? “From a geometry point of view there’s higher detail in the environments, more props, from a technology point there’s much higher detailed textures, animations, effects, sound effect, completely new AI built within this engine.”

Steer added that Activision was “very happy with the review scores” for GoldenEye 007 on Wii and defended the decision to launch first on Nintendo’s console.

“I think the Wii was the right place for the GoldenEye game because of the N64 heritage,” said Steer. “We also needed to take some time to make sure that that new engine could deliver 60fps, 16 player multiplayer, photo-realistic environments. It takes time to develop technology like that.

“They’ve worked on this engine through 2010. Not the whole of 2010 – but as it became clear that people want to see GoldenEye on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 we needed to develop a new engine. That can’t be done in a few months. But the game team was very focused on making sure GoldenEye Wii was the best game that we could make for that platform, while an engine team was working in the background on the technology.”

“They’re a great developer,” he added. “They’re very self-sufficient. They have their own motion capture studio, scanning equipment, tech team, tools team – they do everything themselves, but they kind of just get on with it.

“They don’t want to publicise their engine, or get other people to use it – it’s about the games that they make.”

So Eurocom likes working with its own toys? “Very much so.”

VideoGamer.com awarded 7/10 to the Wii version of the game in its GoldenEye 007 review. “Following a game that, for many, is one of the best FPS experiences of all time was never going to be easy,” we said, “but developer Eurocom has done its best to deliver a game that stands on its own two feet – all while carrying the odd nod to the game we know and love. Questions over the Wii’s ability to house great first-person shooters still remain, while the CoD-like multiplayer can’t quite capture what made the original such a hit.”
