Not a valid criticism, says Epic game designer.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent hands-on preview event in London, Epic games designer Bleszinski rejected criticism from some quarters that Gears of War 2 is too similar to the first game, released in late 2006.
He said: "I'd say that if you fired up Gears 2 and a Beserker burst through the wall and chased you around, or it got dark and then you had to do little light dark puzzles with Kryll, that would be a valid criticism. But none of those things are in Gears 2.
"We instead have opted for far more interesting and compelling things like the truck sequence, the Rock Worm, taking people hostage, shipping with many many more multiplayer modes, having things like Horde as well as these gobs of new weapons, as well as a deeper, darker storyline. I think it really adds up to be truly Gears of War 2."
You'll be able to decide for yourself soon enough. The game is scheduled for release exclusively on the Xbox 360 on November 7. Until then, why not have a gander at our humongous hands-on preview of the game's first act?

I do think they have added alot actually, just like the transition from halo 1 to halo 2 where the gameplay at least was improved immensely, no argument. it is a kind of silly criticism calling it like gears 1.5 though because, when all is said and done, thats allwe really want!!!

yes very true the first gears was a great game and it is hard to improve on something like that. WHile i believe there was nothing truely spectacular added for the second game i think it will be enough to keep the fans happy and it definitely looks better than the mediocre differences between halo 2 and 3

Can they possibly get any deeper or darker than Gears 1?
Also lol, "truck sequence."
I can't imagine Gears 2 being anything more than Gears 1.5 with a truck sequence. (Note - I kinda liked Gears, it had.... *nice* gameplay, but I didn't LOVE it. Nor will I likely LOVE Gears 2 any more. I guess it's just not my kind of thing...)
