Can see Natal working for games like Gears of War.

Speaking to OXM at the Develop Conference some months back now (the interview has only now been published), Epic Games VP Mark Rein revealed that all future Xbox 360 titles from the Unreal Engine dev will support upcoming motion technology Project Natal.

"I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support. We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform," said Rein.

Rein also believes Natal won't be limited to strictly casual experiences, stating he can see himself enjoying an action game using the motion sensing tech.

"Yeah, I can totally see myself sitting in front of my TV using Natal to play games like Gears of War, Call of Duty, or whatever first-person shooter with my buddies," said Rein. "I want to do a hand signal that tells my friend, "Go over there." Instead of even saying it on Live, I just want to motion, "Go over there." Or if I want to throw a grenade, I just lift my right hand off the controller, throw the grenade, then put my hand back on the controller."

Fans of Epic's Gears of War series shouldn't worry that the game is going to be changed in order to incorporate Natal, with Natal more likely to be used to enhance the controller-based gameplay already available.

"I don't think we're going to change the hardcore experience that so many people love so well... You wouldn't change Halo, but you could, if you had Natal, at least to simplify some of the controls.

"In other words, you could get away with a simpler control scheme, as it's really easy to remember throwing a grenade when it's really throwing. I can see that working in multiplayer games, then you get your hand right back on the controller and keep playing, stuff like that, maybe a wave, maybe a taunt. I'm sure that when more people have this technology you'll see some of the hardcore games adapt to it."

Project Natal is expected to be released at some point in 2010.

It could be used for anything vocal interaction, mapable fcial textures or even lobbing the odd grenade. I'm sure half the poster's here have not even read the article and commented on their own speculation. The main control system is not going to be altered as stated so there will obviously be small inclusions. Really liked K3rts post gave some real thought!

When you think about it they have to do something to give you extra control over the game.
Think back to the spectrum days when you only had a joystick with one fire button then as time went on games got more advanced and there was need for extra buttons on controllers to give you more control over your character.
Obviously theres a limit to how many buttons you can have on a controller with it still being useable so having something like natal makes perfect sense and should be great (if it is as good as they say it is)

I thought the whole idea of it was to remove the joypad?

Using a Joypad with Natal seems to be a decent idea to me. Extra functions without the extra buttons - with (hopefully) simple gestures.

Duck behind your sofa and shoot unless everyone has conveniently placed walls in their room to hide behind.

I still don't know how this is gonna work with shooters, nevermind Gears of War.
It's gonna be really intresting to see what they come up with.
