Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada has revealed that Final Fantasy XIII may be the last traditional title that the current Final Fantasy XIII team creates, suggesting development could instead turn towards creating something completely new.

"I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special, and that it's going to be well received by the audience. But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some 'next generation' forms of play," Wada told Edge.

He added: "Internally and externally I feel there’s an expectation of Square Enix to offer something new, and I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they're strictly catering to the particular audience they have now."

Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled for release in Europe on March 9 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

It's hard to say whether he's talking about taking the FFXIII team and working on something completely unrelated to Final Fantasy or whether he's talking about letting them revamp the Final Fantasy series. Could be anything given the way it's phrased, my gut instinct is that he's talking about new IPs.

Is he talking about motion controls? (PS Wand, Natal etc.)

The artical says the complete oposite to what the headline says.

Well it's technically turn-based, but 'menu driven' might be more accurate. Given that lots of abilities/characters have different timers the gameplay is pretty fluid. Typical fight from YouTube is below:

I'd like to see someone expand on Grandia's gameplay engine, moving more into a real-time but without losing the setups an combinations involved in turn-based play.

I must admit to the same sin as well, I've never played a FF game. But isn't it a turn based game? I'm not a big fan of the genre.

To be honest. Square will produce spin-offs of the FF franchise. FF13 is on my list this year to get.

If you imagine any action game (e.g. Batman: Arkham Asylam, Assassin's Creed etc.) where you push buttons to perform moves, Final Fantasy is exactly the same but when you're fighting you first select the move from a list on a menu, then push a button, then wonder why one of your party members has a small yellow bird nesting in his hair.

Think of it as a cross between Runescape and Leona Lewis if that helps.

Personally I thought Square Enix did a great job with The Last Remnant and as long as they keep churning out similar games I'll be happy. Having said that I'd be equally happy to keep seeing Cid pop up every 3 or 4 years for the next 20 years and was really looking forward to seeing what they'd do with Final Fantasy XXX.

Well i think if this is the last one then its a good game to end on for the FF series. I would like to see more new IP from Square Enix i am sure that they could produce something more than FF. Even if we have to wait years for it.

Wow, devastating news for hardcore FF fans.
For me, on the other hand, this would be my first ever experience with Final Fantasy.
I just haven;t ever gotten to grips with it.
I've never played, never seen it...
I don;t even know what it's about or what type of game it is, or they are, or whatever...
