Given the storage limitations of DVD compared to Blu-ray, the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII has been expected to arrive on multiple discs, but thus far there's been no confirmation from Square Enix regarding the exact number of discs.

It looks like we might not have to wait for official confirmation, though, with video game rental firm GameFly indicating the game will ship on three DVDs.

"This is a three disc game, but it only counts as one disc against your rental plan," states GameFly.

A disc count of three is in-line with what game director Motomu Toriyama had previously stated Square Enix was aiming for.

According to Kotaku, GameFly isn't one to pluck this kind of info from thin air.

The game's scheduled for release on March 9 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Well Lost Odessy came on 4 discs and I found that it was fine, however I would always install an RPG anyway, due to faster loading times etc.

I wonder if you'll be able to install all 3 discs to the HDD and not have to switch discs at all.

Do we know for sure that once you get to Disc 3 you don't have to switch any more?

In Star Ocean: The Last Hope once you're close to endgame you have to keep switching between disc 3 and disc 2 every 5 minutes if you took the route through the story that I did (crafting on the Calnus in Disc 3 then running to the Colosseum in Disc 2). That's also a Square Enix game, albeit tri-Ace developed it.

Well that's kind of a moot point because the distinction between the two is not that it comes on 1 or 3 discs it's that it's on PS3 or 360, which is what i assume you're referencing. If you only have a 360 the question is irrelevant.

If 3 discs were cheaper i'd have 3.
If 3 discs increased graphical quality i'd have 3.
If 3 discs improved performance i'd have 3.
If 3 discs added functionality i'd have 3 discs.

The number of discs is irrelevant for me, it's not like you have to keep switching, you go through the story and switch at key points, once you get to the end game you're on the last disc and you stay on that disc. It's not like Riven or Myst on PS1 where you had to keep switching when you went to different areas.

I was properly expecting this announcement.
I knew it would have to come on loads of discs, I was genuinely expecting about 4 though.

Meh, so what. Didn't ruin the PS1, really, and think of the nostalgia of FF7!

Only 3? Mass Effect 2 is on 2 discs so i'd say 3 is an achievement. Hell FF8 came on 5 PS1 discs didn't it? Fuss over nothing.

Certainly going to see more and more of this in the future on the 360 as you just cant fit all games on a dvd.
