ChartTrack reports that EA's FIFA 09 has made a late charge to claim the 2008 Christmas No.1 spot, ahead of Activision's Call of Duty: World at War and Nintendo's Mario Kart Wii.

FIFA 09's Christmas No.1 is largely thanks to a retailer promotion which saw sales of the game rocket, with an 89 per cent increase over last week. This week's No.2, CoD: World at War, could only manage a 13 per cent sales increase.

Hopefully I believe more games will be sold but obviously they will have to sell approx 3 times as many games to reduce the price to this point and maintain profit margins.

I'm thinking Professor Layton and the Curious Village would have been in with a chance if it wasn't for Woolies distribution getting in trouble. It has been interesting this year to see so many games go from new to roughly £19.99/$39.99 within such a short period (days in some cases).

Maybe the industry is experimenting to see if this lower price point is a viable RRP?

I have noticed that the ighest selling games this week are the ones that have been heavily discounted. Fifa £19.99 / Mario Kart £19.99 / Need for speed and several others. So I would say the best selling game for Christmas would be Call of Duty 5 which has recieved no discount followed by Wii Fit.
