The Japanese news site Impress is reporting that the Final Fantasy XI development team leaders, whilst discussing the game’s latest expansion, have let slip some information on future projects. Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka said that the team is now working on a new MMORPG for the PlayStation 3 and Windows Vista, but further information was not forthcoming.

Tanaka also discussed how development on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 differed. He noted that the Xbox 360 Operating System shares many similarities with Windows, making a port of the existing Windows version of Final Fantasy XI to the Xbox 360 a fairly quick task. The same isn’t true of the PlayStation 3. According to Tanaka, development of a PlayStation 3 version of FFXI would take two or three years, with the game having to be redeveloped from scratch.

With such a large effort required to bring FFXI to the PlayStation 3, Tanaka feels that his team’s resources will be better spent developing a new game from the ground up to take advantage of next-gen hardware. Tanaka was also asked about a version of FFXI for the PSP. He admitted that a fully playable version of the game is most likely not possible on the handheld, but thinks features such as auctions and chat would be possible. However, his team has not been working on a PSP version of the game and looks unlikely to do so in the future.
