Five million units of post apocalyptic RPG Fallout: New Vegas have been shipped worldwide, Bethesda Softworks has announced.

The game has generated well over $300 million in retail sales. Figures for digital sales weren't given, but Bethesda described a "heavy volume" of digital downloads.

"We are delighted by the reception Fallout: New Vegas has received from fans around the world," said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. "Despite the large launch quantities for this title, we have already received substantial re-orders from our retail partners, underscoring the tremendous popularity of this highly entertaining game. We believe Fallout: New Vegas will be the 'must buy' title for gamers throughout the holiday season."

Fallout: New Vegas is available now for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The first DLC will be available later this year on Xbox LIVE.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Shipped doesn't directly translate to sales, but retailer re-orders suggest large quantities of the game aren't sitting in retailer storerooms.

The five million figure is an improvement over the 4.7 million units shipped at the launch of Fallout 3 towards the back end of 2008.

Agreed, sickens me. Playing my marathon weekend Fallout 3 sessions I suffered freezing a few times and thought it might have crashed but after a couple of minutes the game managed to catch up with itself and get going again. One of the times I hadn't saved for a while so really didn't want to lose progress.

I totally accept that it is great and they wanted to get it out on time and it's really hard with a massive game, but repeated, multiple system breaking crashes is simply unacceptable.

Shame since everyone is accepting this is ok for a condition for a game to be brought out.

So releasing a game with bugs doesn't affect sales or review scores?

This changes my Game Dev Story tactics quite dramatically.

That's another 2 on this afternoons session - and the devs complained that they were being moaned at so much! It is beyond a joke, but it is also on of the best gaming experiences I have had in many a year.

Tough call.

8 crashes so far? Have the been terminal and you've had to restart the game?

Rightfully so - despite its broken state (I myself have suffered at least 8 crashes) - it is still a masterpiece which sets the bar very high for other games to follow.

I cannot wait to see what DLC they decide to create for it - just hope one will add a load more Vaults to explore - easily one of my favourite parts of the games!
