Xbox 360 users can continue to play the free games downloaded via Microsoft's Games with Gold promotion even if they cancel their Xbox LIVE Gold subscription, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi has clarified.

Multiple games have already been released for free via the promotion, including Assassin's Creed 2, Dead Rising 2 and Fable 3.

Halo 3 and Rainbow Six Vegas are both due to follow later in the year.

The promotion is expected to be available until Xbox One launches this November, but could be extended into 2014.

I didnt know. Had I known, I probably would have signed up for a years sub by now!

Having said that our 360 has been pretty much predominantly used for Castle Crashers and Battleblock theatre, any other games I play on PC or tablet.

I'm pretty sure this has been known since the feature was announced back at E3.

Nothing to do with competition!?! A RSV + DR2 vs Spec ops the line, AC3, Uncharted 3, the list goes on and on and on....

Actually you're correct sir, there is no competition.

That's nothing to do with competition. Without PS+ being such a success, you wouldn't have MS giving anything away at all.

As FM says, Dead Rising 2 has been the highlight, for sure.

Competition really isn't good. We're being shafted over and they've got most of us by the balls because all our friends are on Xbox too. Unless they start popping games out that are still quite new and relevant I can't even be bothered tying up my bandwidth. Rainbow Six Vegas... Really?!? It's about £3 and nearly seven years old!

I'd be very surprised if they didn't extend it, it basically makes Live pay for itself over time, especially if one of the offerings is one you haven't already got and were meaning to pick up anyway.

For me it has been Dead Rising 2 and Case Zero so far, half my Live sub right there. And now it's confirmed I can play it to death forever? Cheers.

I know the Games with Gold offerings haven't exactly been anywhere near the quality of PS Plus offerings, but it's a good start and Microsoft will have to make XBox Live subscriptions better value to keep track with PS+ subscriptions.

Competition is good.
