EA Sports MMA, the new mixed martial arts video game from EA, was dead on arrival at retail, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz has said.

The game was facing an uphill struggle to find a foothold in genre dominated by UFC, a license which THQ recently extended through 2018.

"EA's recently released MMA appears to be more or less DOA at retail," Creutz told investors. "UFC recently announced an extension of its license with THQ, likely putting an end to EA's efforts to expand into the mixed martial arts genre."

MMA entered the UK chart at No.23.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

THQ failed to meet sales targets with UFC 2010, and has since revised its release schedule of UFC licensed video games. It's no great surprise then that EA struggled to make an impact with MMA, a game which was relying heavily on the EA Sports brand to attract UFC fans.

It doesn't appear to have worked, however, and EA will have to decide whether to cut its losses or plug away in a segment which heavily favours THQ's title.

It's the kind of game that is great when you've got a friend over, but has almost no playing value on your own.

I'd love to hear Dana Whites thoughts on this.

I thought the demo was good,so i'm surprised the game sold so poorly.

iPhone version is average at best too. Lots of swiping 2 fingers up and down the screen to get holds and submissions, not the best control system in the world even if it is original.

I think half the battle is poor explanation of what you are supposed to be doing. A tutorial even on the demo would have been good.

Not tried out the demo for this game yet. I'm a big fan of UFC, and UFC 2010 was very good. Felt like every punch was definitely landed and rocked your opponent.

For starters. I didn't see that much advertisement for this game at all. Surprising really, seeing as its EA. I would of expected a few advertisement boards, adverts on the tele and etc.

Also the demo didn't help. I think the game is far weaker than THQ's effort just by the shodyness of the Demo.
