Doom 3 BFG Edition will be released this autumn for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, Bethesda Softworks has announced.

It appears that while we're waiting for a new entry in the Doom franchise, Bethesda has knocked together an enhanced version of the game which arrived on PC back in 2004 and on the original Xbox in 2006.

This new package features Doom 3 and its Resurrection of Evil add-on pack, both said to have been completely remastered. There are also seven new levels – The Lost Mission – which promise hours of new content.

Re-mastered for consoles, the game is said to offer greatly enhanced graphics optimised in 3D, 5.1 surround sound, improved rendering and lighting, a new checkpoint save system, fine-tuned controls, Achievements and trophies.

A big change also comes in the form of an armour-mounted flashlight, making it possible for players to illuminate dark passages and shoot at enemies simultaneously – a feature not present in the original release.

"Doom 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release," said John Carmack, technical director at id Software. "Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it."

And that's not all, Doom 3 BFG Edition also ships with the original Doom and Doom 2.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

The new content and enhanced visuals sound interesting, but it's the armour-mounted flashlight that will be of interest to may Doom 3 fans. Whilst the decision of whether to hold a weapon or flashlight was an interesting concept that certainly added an extra level of horror, we didn't feel it worked when enemy intensity increased.

It's not currently known whether or not the game will include the co-op mode found in the original Xbox version of the game.

Yup, I did a victory pump in the air yesterday when I saw this announced via twitter at work. The manager looked at me gone out, so I filled him in, and he was dancing about also.

£27 to pre-order at Shopto. It may get a price drop later towards release. DR2 Off The Record was firstly going at that price before it got dropped to £21 or somewhere around there.

Anything more than £20 is extortion.

Hmm... never really had the opportunity to play Doom3 when it was released, so looking firward to this!

Assuming, of course, it is released at a sensible pricepoint.

I'm looking forward to this.....but I have to say that swapping from gun to flashilght on Doom 3 generating some truly sh!t your pants moments thatr were diminished slightly in Resserection of Evil which allowed you to hold a torch at the same time as shoot.

I think the ability to illuminate dark passages and shoot enemies simultaneously will totally revolutionise the game, or at least bring it up to the standards of other titles that have been doing it for the last ... half decade. A remastered 8 year old game is still an 8 year old game and call me cynical but, if you're remembered for your last game then it's probably better to have a remastered Doom 3 than Rage preceeding the arrival of Doom 4.

I'm ashamed to say that I used a mod for the PC version. I could use the flashlight and weapons :P

I'll be picking this up for sure. I love Doom 3.

This game still hold one of my most scariest moments in my PC gaming history. And that was right at the start too. The fact you couldn't hold a flash light and shoot and the fact I knew this stopped me from play any more.
This might just be worth a look.
