'We knew it would be a weakness for the game,' says David Anafossi.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution has been out for months now, but the game's annoying boss fights continue to be a talking point: Eidos Montreal has just stepped up and taken responsibility for them.
Earlier this year it was reported that the controversial fights were outsourced to a separate developer, Grip Entertainment. But now the game's producer says that it's Eidos Montreal themselves who must the flak for the battles.
"The problem was not the supplier, it was what we did with them," David Anafossi told Edge. "The boss fights were too much for the team to do internally in the time we had. We totally underestimated the effort to do that correctly. We had to work with an external supplier with that, but the design and everything is from the team at Eidos Montreal."
Anafossi added that the developers were well aware of the flaws in the boss fights, prior to the game's launch:
"We knew that it would be a weakness for the game, that we had to make a compromise to deliver it [on] two levels. First, the boss fights were forced, which is not the Deus Ex experience. Second, there is no mix [of] solutions to tackle the boss fights, which is not Deus Ex either.
"We knew that before the release of the game, but there had to be some compromise. It [was] our decision."
Still, the producer maintained that he's very proud of Human Revolution, despite the fact that the development process was "a nightmare".
Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a great game, despite the boss fights. Still, it's nice that Anafossi is honest enough to take the blame on this, rather than leaving the heat on Grip.
