No, it's not as visually cutting-edge as Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2, but that doesn't mean it's not a fine looking game. Other than some frame rate hiccups here and there (slightly worse in the PS3 version, sadly) the frame rate is silky smooth, there's always an absolute ton of stuff going on all around you (take a moment to look into the sky and you can see how much work has gone into creating this virtual world) and the audio work is exceptional. The Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, among others) score is incredible, matching every heart-stopping moment the campaign throws at you, and the voice acting for the main characters is top drawer, putting many other triple-A releases to shame.

So, that's a rip-roaring, no-holds-barred, action-packed single-player campaign and a staggeringly good co-op mode, and I've yet to mention the competitive multiplayer. It's this that is likely to be played for months and months, keeping Modern Warfare 2 in your disc drive well into 2010. Up to 18 players can take part in numerous solo and team matches set across 16 brand new maps. You also get the same levelling up and perks system as seen in CoD4 and Cod: WaW, meaning that the more time you pump into it the greater your selection of perks will be.

Perks are nothing new these days, but they're still a great inclusion and let you customise your style of play to a greater degree than what your weapon load-out alone would allow. You have three perk slots to fill, each offering you a choice of unlocked abilities or bonuses. As well as plenty of the perks seen in CoD4 (Slight of Hand, Stopping Power, Steady Aim), there are new choices such as Ninja (invisible to heartbeat sensor) and Hardline (killstreaks require one less kill). These can be improved by the new Pro perks, unlocked by completing time-intensive objectives during play, giving you enhanced abilities.

Kill Streaks - the system that rewards you with mid-match bonuses for racking up a certain number of kills in a row - are present and correct, and there are a handful of new rewards on offer if you're good enough (access to the Predator missile system and an air-dropped care package, being two of them). Terrible gamers needn't get too despondent, as Infinity Ward has added a new Deathstreak mechanic that assists players who die frequently. Martyrdom, the infamous perk that saw your character releasing a grenade upon death, is now one of these, as is Copycat, which gives you the kit of the guy who killed you - great if you're still wandering around as a noob with the starter load-out.

It's no Uncharted 2, but it still looks brilliant.

It's no Uncharted 2, but it still looks brilliant.

Modern Warfare 2 also features unlockable attachments, such as laser sights for your weapons, and lots of new firearms to get your hands on; this is just as well, as the starting kit isn't anything to write home about. Also back are multiplayer challenges: weapon-specific goals that award more XP to go towards your overall rank. These range from the relatively simple (10 headshots) to the downright tricky (40 bullet penetration kills - achieved by firing through walls). All of this stuff sets Modern Warfare 2 apart from its competitors, making for one hell of an addictive multiplayer experience.

In truth, CoD4's multiplayer mode didn't quite get the credit it deserved back in 2007, with no-one really knowing how well it would be taken up by the millions of people who bought it. Today it's obvious that gamers will be playing Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer for a very long time. In fact, it's hard to see the majority of people wanting to play any other multiplayer shooter until the next CoD is released, such is the quality of what's on offer here. That seems like as good a place as any to end this review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 takes everything that was great about CoD4 and ramps it up to the next level. With the best multiplayer shooting that money can buy, an incredibly action-packed campaign and plenty of superb two-player co-op levels, this is without a doubt a real contender for game of the year.

Hahaha, this is one of the funniest threads ever. Where did all the love go? I disappear for a day and look what happens.

There are so many childish posts on here I cannot even try to reply to them all. I will point out a few of the ones that seem particularly silly, but before I do...

Tom, good review. I haven't finished the game yet and so I cannot comment on the 10/10 score, but I liked the review none the less (but not nearly as much as I am liking the game).

@Mr_Ninjutsu: I respect your opinions about most things gaming but I think this time you have shot your guns a bit early. You said "I have yet to play it" and "I think i can [have an opinion] seeing as i was told pretty much everything i needed to hear from my friends at uni". What you have admitted therefore is that it is not your opinion but the opinion of others. I would say to you save your opinion until you have at least played the game. It is the same reason I have not had an opinion about UC2 (about which I am deeply jealous).

@Lee: Was that really necessary? You knew it would antagonise.

@vrc: You call the review mediocre but you don't say why. That's probably why you had the backlash. And btw, when you start calling people "an immature, petty idiot" you are already stooping to their level.

@karlius: I should probably say something but your Christopher Reeve photo nearly killed me.

And in general, enough with the swearing already.

CoDMW2 is more of an arcade game. No realism what so ever. The knife throwing is just silly, who can throw i knife 200 meters and kill a guy with body armor^^ When I think of CoDMW2, I think of a small child infront of his computer "nerd-raging". Try out Battlefield Bad Company 2, much more realistic. For example the bulletdrop effect. I don't see that in CoDMW2.

Are you insane. first of all I´m against giving a game the highest score since it can always be better but this can be WAAAY better.

well 0,5 points worth atleast is the ability to open doors. 4 points worth is when you have more space to move than in a 2d platform game. Its a small, tiny little trail all through the game, extremely small maps in multiplayer for todays standard. The porting from xbox or ps3 whichever is was originally made for was almost as bad as it can get. Atleast you werent asked to press "A" or "x" like in some ported games. The single-player was even more boring, it was so scripted so that takes away 3 points. When you replay it on hardest after finishin it in normal in a few hours you know exactly where and what everything was gonna come, no randomeness what so ever. No surprises, just like rewatching a movie you just saw.

Horrible game for that money. I feel robbed.
absolutely max 10 Euro I think you shold pay for this since atleast half of the coop-maps are fun even thought theyre retardedly simple on pc with a mouse for aiming.
Is this cost like 7 Euro I would give it an 8/10 but for 60Euro(!!!) its getting a 2,5/10

Wah.

1. You shouldn't do that, as their opinion could differ vastly from yours.

2. What would the price drop be, maybe a few dollars?

3. I think you shouldn't focus so much on the scores and more on the general opinion of the game- good, bad, or medicore. In my mind, these people liked the game only slightly more if they gave it a 10 than if they gave it a 9, and etc etc.

I care

I read reviews, so I can buy a game that I will not feel I wasted my money on. When some idiot reviews a game and gives it a perfect review when the game clearly doesn’t deserve it, is total BS. If I new how bad this game was, say a 7. I would have waited until the game had dropped in price.

Look.

Who cares if it should be 7, 8, 9, or 10?

Why does he suddenly have to have your opinion?

This is directed not just at you, but for people saying similar things.

7, 9, and 10 all mean "This game is cool and should be bought!" so who cares about the specifics?

Again, it's their opinion. Lighten up guys.

WOW a 10 are you serious. How much did IW pay you. The single player is way too short and has a bad story line. Multiplayer matchmaking system is junk, P2P is terrible and you can only play from a limited list of game types. The lag is so bad in this game. At best this game should be a 7. You owe me 60 dollars Tom.

@Mr_Ninjutsu - They aren't exactly going to completely change the game for a sequel are they?
I know, considering Call of Duty 4 was such a huge success, lets make Modern Warfare 2 a fantasy MMO - What did you honestly expect them to do for a sequel?

The game has many new things compared to the old one. 2 player co-op mode, most of the guns/equipment is different, different HUD which makes for a better feel, larger levels, different multiplayer system with way more unlocks and a completely different campaign. How is this "more of the same"?

Uncharted 2 hasn't exactly changed from the first has it?
