According to a report by the LA Times, Activision now has a third development team working on the Call of Duty franchise.

In recent years the blockbuster franchise has alternated between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, each producing a title every two years. With a third development team added to the mix it's not clear what this means for the franchise: a new three-year development cycle, an extra Call of Duty release each year, or perhaps an all-new Call of Duty project focussed on multiplayer.

The next question to answer is the identity of the third studio. Activision has put several studios to work on the franchise in the past, including n-Space and Certain Affinity, then there's the publisher internal studios such as Raven Software. The other possibility is that the newly formed Sledgehammer Games, headed by former Visceral Games duo Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, has been put straight to work on something Call of Duty.

They're probably just doing the Wii or handheld versions to save Treyarch the trouble.
