Call of Duty: Black Ops, which launches worldwide on November 9, is likely to be the "biggest entertainment launch of all time," Activision boss Bobby Kotick has told investors.

Kotick's confidence comes with good reason, too, as Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg explained.

"Today, pre-orders of Black Ops have already broken the industry pre-sell record set by last year's Call of Duty," said Hirshberg. "We have unprecedented levels of support both from our retail partners and from the first parties all from our vested to make this the entertainment launch of the year."

With record-breaking pre-orders there's no reason to doubt Kotick's prediction. Whether or not the game can achieve the same "fat" tail of Modern Warfare 2 is another thing, but COO Thomas Tippl believes this is achievable, too.

"I would not be surprised that Black Ops follow on revenue is going to be also setting a new record in terms of percentage of total revenues for the franchise," Tippl told investors during last night's earnings call.

If this came from any one else's mouth I wouldn't mind the story.

But it didn't: I came form Kotick's...

Gaming is the new film industry. Its breaking taboos like sex, drugs violence and terrorism (even if it isn't really standing up to this one properly yet). All these were outed in the film industry over the last 20yrs and have now been accepted , gamin is now becoming the interactive movie that lets you be the star or the villian and by me anyway is seen more fun and better value then a dvd , bluray or night on the lash . 100hrs of Mass effect , fable , final fantasy ,Mw,Warhawk and BC2 for around £40 a pop is fantastic fun and much more entertainment than anything else. Even games like the Lego ones are more value and this for me is the reason why i game and why games should push boundries and improve on prior installments, unfortunately the Cod franchise on a whole like Halo and Resi for me has stalled with poor level design, story or just lack of any real changes to format compared to other games on the shelf that give you something different that means gameplay or structure is giving more than one option or different ways to do things.
For sure Cod and the other games i have mentioned all beat movies now as entertainment releases and that for me makes me proud to be a gamer and long may that continue .

What I'd like to know is how do they quantify what makes something the "biggest entertainment launch of all time"? Is it simply sales figures? If so, over what period of time?

I completey agree with you Steg! Although how people in general can say gamers are sad and a bunch of geeks are beyond me. My comeback all the time is: "If gamers are sad and a bunch of loosers, then so is 80% of the UK"

;) Im proud to call myself a gamer!

It's good to know that the biggest entertainment launch each year is a video game, it just shows how big they are these days.

Its most probs going to be the biggest entertainment launch. All you got to say is xbox360 and the frist thing that will mostprobs come out of the mouth of others will be COD Which i hate so much. "would like to say COD is a good game, but its more then just COD game on the xbox360"
All in all i hope Blackhops is better then the last COD.
