Aside from the impressive, if rather violent, looking Mad World, SEGA and Platinum Games showcased two other games at a top-secret event earlier this week. While neither received the same lengthy gameplay demo we were lucky enough to get for Mad World, a few nuggets of information were revealed and core gameplay concepts were announced.

"Seven years ago I created Devil May Cry. Many of you have said that it kick-started the action genre into 3D, but did it really? Have action games really progressed past what we accomplished seven years ago? I don't believe they have. We as creators have squandered the opportunity to make things better, smoother, more intense, more engaging; that is why I have come back to 3D action. It is time to make good on the promise of seven years ago and I feel that we are the only team who can do it. The era of style and action is over. Today we take action to its climax."

Claims like this aren't uncommon in the world of video games, but when Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya has such strong words to say we're more inclined to believe him. We weren't shown much on this brand-new action title for Xbox 360 and PS3, but we're desperate to find out more.

All we were treated to was a short CGI trailer. It featured lead character Bayonetta, a hard-ass gun-touting action hero. The big difference between it and most other action titles is that Bayonetta is a woman who has guns in her hands and strapped to her feet - pretty nifty stuff. Gameplay and story information given was extremely light, but we do know that she's a witch, reborn in a modern era, doing battle with angels. As well as her guns she's said to have witch-like abilities, but we'll just have to wait to find out what those are.

The trailer depicted a very short fight between Bayonetta and one of the angels, which didn't go too well for our winged friend. After a quick scrap and a sharp kick to the face, Bayonetta ended his misery with a foot-pistol shot to the head - blood spilled almost as readily as it does in Mad World, almost.

And that was our lot. Not a glimpse of actual gameplay, but the trailer was stylish enough to get us excited. When the original creator of Devil May Cry claims this game is going to be "better, smoother, more intense, and more engaging," we're tempted to believe him. Look for a lot more on the game in the coming months. Bayonetta is scheduled for release in 2009.
