The games that just missed out on the Top 10.

Choosing our favourite games of 2010 was no easy task, with arguments, witchcraft and mathematical equations all being used to take hundreds of games and whittle them down to just 20. Read on for our thoughts on the games that just missed out on the Top 10 and head to our Game of the Year 2010 hub from Monday December 20 for the start of our video countdown from 10-1, as well as access to loads of other content.

20: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Ezio's back, look at that. This sequel-to-a-sequel is quite possibly the best title in the series so far. Brotherhood has learned its lessons from the previous two games: it's changed its combat to be faster, maintained the charming personality of AC2 and chucked out the tedious visual puzzles that littered the last game. The overarching storyline might continue to slowly unfold at the usual glacial pace, but Ezio's Renaissance tale is still teeming with life.

The Achievements are better than Trophies loot probably paid for the VG Christmas party. :shifty:

my personal favorite is god of war 3 and bayonneta.though i've not played them i've seen the combat in both of them.that's wat i like best in games.

Well I'm sure Tom Orry said on the podcast once that he probably should have given Cod:4 Modern Warfare a 10. But he gave it a 9 because he didnt have enough time to play the multiplayer side of it. If time restraints play a big part on reviews then they may only have one play through before scoring, and I have never seen a reviewer go back and change the score of a game.
Sure they can factor replay value in, but until they actually play it again I think its hard to say whether you will enjoy it the second time through. But thats my personal opinion :D (with exceptions of course)
Reviews are all just other peoples opinions of course, and an opinion can't be wrong :)

The reviewers consider replay value during the scoring process though, surely? Interesting argument.

Would have loved to be a fly on the wall during the VG team 'discussions' about the GOTYs!

I agree, but just to play devils advocate, maybe the score was given based on one play through, but might not have the lasting effect of another game which keeps on giving?

Is it no interesting that a 10/10 game iis beaten by games less than 10/10, i actually don't enjoy the hack n slash genre but does it not make the review score's look rather pointless

I thought a 20 to 11 countdown might spoil the Top 10 a bit, but upon trying to work out what they might be I am officially stumped. I can think of five definite titles, but what the other five might be is anyones guess. Roll on Dec 20th.

Totally agree with you 100% @guyderman. A bit disappointed by Civ V's position, but yeah what can you do but wait and see what the community says...

COOL means Alpha Protocol and Sly Collection still in with a chance . Bah who am i kidding as long as BFBC2 makes the top5 i'm happy.

Haven't played it yet, but I would have expected GOW3 to place higher, as with FIFA11.
Not really surprised with anything else yet.

NFS Hot Pursuit was better than Blur, but Blur is still a great game. So many good games this year though, some will have obviously suffered because of that.

It will be interesting to see how different the Community GOTY shapes up to VG's GOTY. I actually think that there won't be a great deal of difference tbh it's easy to say that the likes of Alan Wake and AC:Brootherhood should be placed higher - but peoples minds may change when other titles in the top ten are announced. Personally I didn't rate AC:Brootherhood any higher than 2 (although I haven't finished playing it yet) and Alan Wake was OK but didn't blow me away - but there will be games that I've personally really liked this year that won't have even made the Top 20. Like we all say many times over about reviews - It's all down to opinions.
