According to Ubisoft Montreal chief executive Yannis Mallat, "3D is to pictures what Dolby Stereo was to sound" and believes that once consumers experience gaming in 3D they won't want to go back to traditional two-dimensional experiences.

Ubisoft will be first out the door with a big budget, high profile game release in 3D, with James Cameron's Avatar: The Game. Like the movie on which the game is based, the Ubisoft developed game will be best experienced in 3D, but also playable in 2D.

A 3D capable television or monitor, plus a pair of polarising glasses are required to experience 3D.

Avatar is scheduled for release on Friday, with the movie to open a few weeks later on December 17.

Is Mallat right? Is 3D set to be the revolution in moving pictures that stereo was to sound? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

To my knowledge they dont change the cinema screens at the movies... Just stick your 3D glasses on and your away. WHats different about these new polarized monitors that are needed to get the 3D effect... The games been released now so where are they?

This would be great if there were any 3D TVs available to buy. I have not seen one mention of any release date for any consumer 3D TV at any price point, not to mention any universal standards. How do they expect us to play this game in 3D during its product life cycle if there are no 3D TVs to buy?
