Assassin's Creed Comet – a second Assassin's Creed title rumoured to be in development for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year – may be set in Ancient Rome, judging by comments made by Ubisoft Toronto head Jade Raymond.

Discussing the series success with Canadian website The Grid, Raymond attributed its popularity to letting players take on the role of "a badass assassin".

"But then there is an additional element of getting to relive and play a role in these pivotal moments in history," she continued. "We work with historians to recreate these societies — ancient Rome, the French Revolution. And because each game is crafted in a new era, players don’t get tired of the it."

The French Revolution, of course, has already been confirmed as the setting for next-gen exclusive Assassin's Creed: Unity. The setting for Comet, however – if real - has yet to be revealed.

Rome featured as the setting for Assassin's Creed 2 and 2010's Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. But Raymond's reference to Ancient Rome could suggest an altogether different time period.

Interestingly, in 2011 Ubisoft issued a survey asking players where they would like the series to go in the future. One of the options was "the rise of Cesar's Empire in Ancient Rome".

Comet may also refer to Caesar's Comet, a major event in Roman history that saw one of the brightest recorded comets pass by the Earth at the time of Caesar's death. The comet also spawned "a cult of the comet", known as the "Temple of the Comet Star", and featured on some Roman coins.

Prior rumours from Kotaku, however, suggest that Assassin's Creed Comet could be set in North America. Kotaku also correctly revealed Assassin's Creed Unity prior to its official announcement.

So, do Raymond's comments hint at the future of Assassin's Creed or is she simply referring to prior games? A Ubisoft representative told VideoGamer.com that it does not comment on rumour or speculation when contacted earlier today.

Ancient Egypt would have been my top choice - with the ability to use asps to poison/lay traps for enemies.

So long as the story is a little more exciting thatn Black Flag's - how the hell Ubi managed to make a pirate-based game so dull still astounds me!

Bull, three of the games were centred around one character in the same era. I was tired in Revelations and IV, even though they were set in new places. We need more then just a bigger playground, we also need new things to do in them.
