Michael Fassbender will star in and co-produce an Assassin's Creed movie, according to a report on entertainment website Variety.

The Prometheus star will team up with his DMC Film partner Connor McCaughan to bring Ubisoft's historical-action series to the big screen in a production headed up by Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice [to play the lead role]", said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures. "Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."

It's not known which time period or which assassin the film will follow, nor when the film is scheduled to release.

Ubisoft previously teamed up with Disney to produce the big-screen adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

But in addition to Assassin's Creed, Variety reports Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot also wants to develop films for the publisher's Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon series'.

Of course, this isn't the first time Fassbender has gotten himself involved with the world of video games.

In 2010, he provided the voice of Logan in Fable III.

It could just be based in the same "universe" as the games.

Halo started off as an adaptation of the game and then they changed it to a film about the soldiers pov I think.

This new AC film could be focused on none of the characters of the game but on a new assassin.
The comics have focused on other aspects of that "universe" other than Desmond etc. The best was the fall of the assassin's to the templers in 2000 with a good different take on our world.
For example the Templer's rigged the US election for Al Gore to lose and for George. W Bush to win in the comics per their wiki I think lol.

It won't get made even though Ubi Soft are 50/50 with Sony. The conditions they have agreed to supposedly make it impossible for the film to get past production with Mr. Fassbender on a "pay or play" deal it seems like deal. Nic Cage was with Superman which is common for producers to try and get the film moving.
A co-producer credit is basiclly and excuse to pay the actor more money not actually doing any extra work on the film or any real say in how it goes, great example is Sig Weaver for Alien 3.
I would imagine Ubi Soft have final approval on script, director, actors etc and certain things have to happen in the movie and no leway for companies to advertise within the film like Transformers or Batman do which will make the film even more expensive.

I would imagine it's because Ubi Soft have been very unhappy with the way their previous franchises have been treated in the past.

I think they should just a good filmmaker do what he/she wants as the AC franchise in terms of story is all over the place anayway.
I mean the ending in Revelations was pretty much the same ending in AC 2.

I'm not sure how I feel about this if they keep the same setting as the game as in have Desmond, the animus and the Altair/ezio characters that would be great but would make for a long film or a trilogy, can't think how they could adapt it to work in a 2-3 hour period, some games should just stay as games this is one of them.

I hope that one day they create a live-action Pokémon movie with Samuel L. Jackson, Susan Boyle and Danny DeVito as Brock, Misty and Ash respectively, with special guest Rick Waller as Snorlax.
