A petition set up in an attempt to raise awareness of the fact that there are no playable female characters in Aliens: Colonial Marines multiplayer has surpassed its goal.

A figure of 1000 signatures was set as the petition's goal, and at the time of writing 1798 people have signed up.

The furore over Aliens: Colonial Marines multiplayer started when Gearbox producer Brian Burleson confirmed that gamers wouldn't be able to play as female marines in the game's multiplayer mode.

The petition stated: "What we want is the ability to create a custom female to represent ourselves just like the men can, in multiplayer/co-op in order for us to 'become a Colonial Marine' as well as accurately represent the other half of the United States Colonial Marine Corps!"

Neither SEGA nor Gearbox have responded to the petition.

Like i said in other Mass Effect threads, the writer wanted the animation team to put as much sex scenes in it as possible, probably not enough time to add more animations.

God, all this discussion made mw watch all 2 alien films......people keep telling me there is a third and forth, pfft, what drivel.

MInd you, it took until the third game for the Mass Effect team to properly animate the female Shepherd so as to differentiate the movement from a male Shepherd. I recall a couple of other dev teams saying it was the addtional animation sets that would be needed as an excuse for why female playable characters didn't appear in other titles.

But that is no excuse.

The bigger question remains, why aren't they already in Aliens? I think next to Hudsons "Game over man! GAME OVER!!" quote, the most recognisable is "Has anyone ever mistaken you for a man?" followed up with "No, have you?"

Alien has ALWAYS been about strong female roles and if anyone tells you otherwise, slap them and tell them they're nobs.

'Include Playable Females in Aliens: Colonial Marines Multiplayer' petition reaches its goal'

Surely the 'goal' would be that Gearbox confirms that they are going to have female marines? Yeah, go ahead, add some women. Women are good, they're able to carry big guns and remind me that I'm a bit of a sad-sack for playing too many games (which I am but have you seen TV these days?).

There seems to be a petition for everything these days. I petition that all the constant online moaners learn how to programme and make game code, create AAA standard graphics and create a script and games design concept that's award winning (the good award kind) and pleases EVERYONE!

Don't know what they are moaning about there are plenty of women in the likes of 'Dead or Alive 5' it's not like there are no women in video games - as once quoted by the great Harry Enfield - 'WOMEN! KNOW YOUR LIMITS!' :0)

Why not include women's football in FIFA? It's becoming far more recognised as an international sport now.

WHO signed off on this? I find it ridiculous that in 2012 anybody would think that shipping a game in this state was a good idea. This isn't FIFA, this is fiction!

Makes perfect sense to include women considering Sigourney's role in cementing women in strong Sci-fi roles (and across genres).
