Would you like to buy the John Carmack-backed virtual reality headset?
News
Now you can, for $300.
If you've been keeping track of John Carmack's oddball attempt to bring Virtual Reality back to life, here's some good news: you can now help make the device become a reality.
The new version of the gadget is dubbed Oculus Rift, which coincidentally is also the name of the villain in a rubbish sci-fi story I wrote when I was 12.
So, fancy playing Doom 3 BFG Edition while wearing one of these?
If you do, you'll need to head to the Oculus Rift Kickstarter and pledge $300 or more.
You'll also get a devkit and access to the Oculus Development Center; this is very much aimed at developers, if you hadn't guessed.

If they produce one that works with Skyrim for under £250 I'd be tempted, for £149 I'd open my wallet day one.

Further along in the future though, smaller more portable versions of this (along the line of Google's Project Glass perhaps) might make it mainstream. But at this point in time with our current technologies, this is doomed from the getgo.
Problem is even if they make the damn thing, hardware-wise they will have a hard time convincing someone to back the distribution side of things. And software-wise most developers would rather work with something with more mass appeal, platforms with more established userbases, like iOS or XBLA for example.
