Watch Dogs is "already a great game", Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes, but the decision to delay it into next year will offer opportunities for the publisher to build it as a key "long-term pillar" alongside games like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry.

Discussing the title's delay in a conference call last night, Guillemot said that "the Watch Dogs development team has been working night and day to deliver on this ambition for this Christmas. And today, we can say we already have a great game in hand."

Nevertheless the decision to set back the title will help "increase its potential next year", for which it's expected to sell at least 6.2m units.

"In a world of mega blockbusters, we have come to the conclusion that the team needed additional time to realise the game's full potential," Guillemot continued. "This will put us in a position to build Watch Dogs as a long-term pillar of our future performance alongside the likes of Assassin's Creed and Far Cry."

Watch Dogs had originally been due to launch on all formats – including PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - on November 22. The game now won't see a release until at least April 2014.
