wonderful 101 -

A playable demo of The Wonderful 101 is now available to download on the Wii U eShop.

The demo offers players an early taste of Platinum's 'mass-hero action' brawler before it goes on sale at the end of the month, although it isn't yet known how much is included in the download.

Still, in a week lacking few major new releases, this should give you something to get to grips with over the weekend.

Look out for our review of the game next Sunday, August 18.

Having played the demo yesterday, I gained two things from that experience. Firstly, I'm more interested in the game then I was before, and secondly the controls range from "takes time to get used to" to "terrible".

You have to draw symbols that correspond to the correct transformation before attacking. You can do this on the touch screen or with the analogue sticks. You can more precisely draw things on the touch screen, but that leaves you open to attacks, since your hand is away from the dodge button. The analogue stick is very imprecise and can lead you messing up attacks combos and getting hit.

The problem is when you start drawing the game goes into slow motion "bullet time", but as soon as you stop drawing the slow-mo stops, giving you a fraction of a second to react, if you had started drawing at the wrong time. This could of been rectified very easily, if there was simply a button to toggle the slow-mo. You could then turn on slow-mo draw the symbol, and get back into position to react once you toggle slow-mo. It's a shame the devs didn't think of this.
