The Wii U had a much needed boost in sales for the week of July 8 in Japan, Media Create figures have revealed.

In the week which finally saw Pikmin 3 arrive in stores, Wii U hardware sales rose 169 per cent from 8,251 units to 22,199 units. The 3DS continues to rule the hardware roost, selling 43,435 units.

Pikmin 3 itself, which launched July 13, shifted 92,720 copies.

Also new this week was New Super Luigi U, which moved 24,881 copies.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Whilst the Wii U sales increase is very much needed, Pikmin 3's launch week sales of under 100k doesn't bode well for its longevity.

Nintendo releases games for a system with no games; Sales go up. Quelle surprise!

I still dont think they have enough to counter MS or Sony; Not this time around.

Well considering the original Pikmin only managed around 150k sales in Japan I don't think 100k sales in it's first couple of days are too bad. Pikmin was never a major franchise for Nintendo, the majority of its sales coming in the West.
Good to hear about the boost though. By the end of the year the Wii U will be worth owning I feel. SSB & Mario Kart right at the turn of the year, expecting a Zelda HD announcement not long after Wind Waker's release.
