The Wii U has sold 3.06 million units as of December 31, 2012, Nintendo has announced as part of its third-quarter financial results.

Of this 3.06 million units, 1.32 million units were sold in the US, 830,000 units shifted in Japan, and 900,000 were sold across Europe.

Nintendo has also cut its Wii U hardware sales forecast for the year ending March 31, 2013 from 5.5 million to only 4 million units.

Regarding Wii U software, Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land sold 2.01 million and 2.33 million units, respectively. Worldwide sales of Wii U software is 11.69 million units, giving a software attach rate of around 4 games per Wii U console sold. These figures include packaged and downloadable versions.

The attach rates in each territory do, however, differ considerably. In Japan 1.48 million games were sold, meaning under two per Wii U console. In the US 6.4 million games were sold, meaning almost five games were sold per Wii U. Across Europe 3.82 million games were sold, giving an attach rate of over four per Wii U.

Through the nine-month period ended December 31, 2012, Nintendo has shipped 21.45 million hardware units and 126.57 million software units worldwide. Global unit sales, including lifetime totals, are as follows (millions of units):

My prediction for the how well the WiiU would sell from launch till March, was 4 million, back in November, (I remember wrting that in a thread/ article at some point) so this isn't really a surprise to me. Still, it could also have been a lot worse at this point. Decent attach rate for the most part.

At least they are still in to make a profit if things continue for this finacial year. Also nearly 30 million units sold for the 3DS is pretty good, for a console originally branded a doomed faliure.
