Need For Speed: Most Wanted U News for Wii U

The Wii U is not the underpowered piece of kit some would have you believe, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told investors.

Asked outright if the perception of the Wii U as an underpowered console would limit future third-party releases on the platform, Iwata said:

"As you stated, it is a fact that some software development companies assume that Wii U is not powerful enough. On the contrary, some developers say in interviews that Wii U has a different architecture from other consoles and that, when utilized in the right way, it can perform well."

He added: "At the moment, there is a great deal of contradictory information. Nintendo is required to make more efforts to dispel such a misconception. In fact, some software companies are actively supporting Wii U and others are not. It is important to have supportive companies enjoy successful sales of a game and feel that their decision to develop something for Wii U was correct. We understand that this cannot possibly be achieved overnight and it may sound unconvincing under the current slow sales of Wii U.

"We would like to work to revitalize the Wii U market and show you favourable results for third-party software from this summer," Iwata concluded.

The Wii U has already seen jazzed up ports of current generation games, with Criterion's Need for Speed: Most Wanted sporting an improved texture resolution. An upcoming version of Square Enix's Deus Ex: Human Revolution also promises to be the best version on its release.

No, they should stick with the most popular platforms. Which they do. If there ends up being enough people with Wii U's then it'll get more third party support. Until then developers go where the people are going, at the moment that is to Sony and MS.

Indeed, what is the point of having similarly powered systems with a small amount of exclusives? Media consumption? Community? up front cost? Convenience? Aesthetics? Accessibility? That's a few things. But they're also mostly things that should arguably be irrelevant.

For me, consoles exist for 3 reasons: Convenience, they sit by your TV unobtrusively and provide numerous other functions from the comfort of your sofa. Accessibility: You put a disc in and play it. Control pads make controlling the system easier than mouse and keyboard, no upgrades, not managing patches and drivers yourself, no cleaning up your system so it remains stable. Security: Consoles are closed systems with very few ways in and out, they have a simple set of controls so that all content can be restricted for children's use and they are much 'safer' for anyone to use than a PC.

Those are the 3 main reasons anyone would choose a console over PC imo. If the inside of a console were the same as a PC what do they lose? Exclusivity deals? Perhaps. From a developer's point of view if a console's architecture were like a PC it would be a godsend for them. To be able to develop your game once and distribute it across multiple outlets would save this industry a fortune. Division between consoles is what makes developing games so much more expensive and in turn our hobby as a whole.

Back to Nintendo: Arguably they only stand out with their first party games. That's a situation of their own making. Every system they release is built around their own titles and what they can do with them. Which is fine, the games they release are compelling and people love them. problem for me is I have little confidence at the moment that if I bought a Wii U that I wouldn't be missing out on a LOT of other titles. At least with Sony/MS i'm only likely to miss out on the exclusives.

At the moment the only reason to buy a Nintendo system is to play Nintendo's games. Same as with the Wii. But I'm sure Nintendo will release a bunch of first party titles that people love and everyone will proclaim the system is a success on the strength of them alone. People will still say Nintendo has poor 3rd party support, but for some reason it won't matter.

It matters to me though, and clearly to everyone that isn't buying a Wii U. There are already some huge 3rd party titles that aren't making it to Wii U but are to PS4 and whatever MS has to offer. PS4 isn't out yet and we havent even seen the next xbox and devs are already supporting them better.

By that logic, devs shouldn't even bother with the Nextbox and PS4, and should just stick to the PC....

The N64, Gamecube and Wii both had some good third party games that were nowhere near 'shovelware', though, so they can easily match this.

What is the point of having 3 consoles with exactly the same games and just a smattering of exclusives? Nintendo tend to stand out in this regard and have done since the N64.

here's the thing: comparing it to last gen is a waste of time, we all know it's going to be more powerful than the 'current' gen. What they need (if they actually want to keep their 3rd party support) is to convince developers that their new system is powerful enough to stand aside Sony and Microsofts offerings.

Fact of the matter is if you're a development house and you have 2 platforms of comparable power you can create your software for, and one that is underpowered on a different architecture with a smaller install base then you're just not going to bother with that one. The cost of developing it on a different system at different levels of detail and functionality is just not worth the return.

Of course Nintendo could just keep relying on their first party games and flesh out the gaps between those with a ton of shovelware like the 'current' gen. Wouldn't be the first time and i'm sure it wont be the last.

Well physically it is more powerful than the current gen, but that doesn't mean much if third parties can't make the most of it.

But Nintendo don't play the same game as everyone else and they're not going to be bothered playing the power game. What they really need is more unique software. First party stuff is coming, but they need third parties to get more involved.

Though first they need to actually tell people about the console. Their PR campaign didnt really do much to educate the public.

..and maybe get a price drop...
